Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

The plaza is breath taking. El Duomo and the plaza are amazing places to visit. And of course a pic at the plaza is a must.

There are always a lot of people milling about in front of the Duomo and Baptistery. During the day there is a long line waiting to go into the cathedral. Lots of outdoor restaurants dot the periphery. A happening place!

Outside/inside was amazing architecture. Inside just underwhelming as compared to other duomo in Italy but still a must see in Florence.

This square hosts the legendary Duomo cathedral and the smaller Baptistery of St. John. This area is pretty busy throughout the day and the evening and it was nice to walk around the Duomo and appreciate its beauty and grandeur.
Shops were aplenty and just watch out for city vehicles roaming the area. But it is mostly car-free, pretty dominated by pedestrians.
And to confirm, there was no hay for Ezio and prospective assassins who want to follow his footsteps to land on. Do not attempt, you will desynchronize. And yes, that was an Assassin Creed reference. Firenze was signature place for the game's fans.

The architecture and grandeur of the Duomo will take your breath away. I would recommend seeing it in day time as well as night to fully imbibe its beauty.

I went to 10 am mass on a weekday (English masses are at 5 pm on Saturdays). It was solemn (definitely no cameras, please) and afterwards we migrated over the the main alter to contemplate, pray or go to confession. All of this out of sight of the madding crowds shuffling along in the nave. For me, this is the best way to experience a place like the Duomo.

We haven’t had the chance to go inside, we just walked around the building. Nevertheless a breathtaking experience. A must-see while in Florence.

This is one of the many 'must do' when in Florence. Even though the lines queuing up to go inside the Dome were far too long for us, to just walk around the Piazza is still worth the experience!

My daughter and I went to Florence on a day trip from my beautiful Umbria. First time for her ( we live in the UK) so we hit straight away Piazza del Duomo. She was amazed by the beauty of the cathedral’ s façade and the complex including Giotto’ bell tower. Simply one of the best churches in Italy, the colours of the marbles are amazing and spectacular during sunset when they turn pink like the sky.

Do we need to prebook the tickets for visiting in June ? And do we engage a guide as well ? Meaning is that recommended ?

Yes, prebooking is necessary. You can buy the tickets online before leaving for Italy. We didn’t feel a guide was needed.

I am visiting on Thursday 21st April and I am purchasing the Brunelleschi Pass. I note that the Cathedral is only open 10:15-12:00 (sadly we cannot make it at this time) and my ticket is from 2:15pm.
When visiting Brunelleschi's Dome and/or Giotto's Bell Tower are you still able to see inside the Cathedral? Also, are the Duomo Terraces accessed when going to the Dome?

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. Yes, the Cathedral is open. Lines are long for the side entrance to the Duomo visit. After visiting the Duomo for a great view you exit inside the Cathedral. Don't forget to visit Brunelleschi's tomb located in the lower level next to the gift shop.

Do you need to abide by the dress code if you are going up the dome and not into the cathedral? It’s over 100 degrees in Florence this week and I thought they might relax on the dress code....

They do not relax on dress code. I was turned down wearing a high neck sleeveless top in the basilica next to the Duomo. Everything else was covered! I would second the idea of wearing a sundress and something to cover your shoulders. The heat was definitely rough some days.

Hola Patricia!

Can i just pay to go up the dome or do I need an all entry pass?

I was unable to get a reservation for the dome as I was only there four days. You need to be there six days to have access to tickets for the dome if you are using the Firenze card because it is in such demand. Book and pay for it separately if you are intent on doing it. Otherwise, just go up the neighbouring tower - same view.

Unfortunately not, keep in mind this building is centuries old and the staircases are even too narrow for two people. You may be able to get to the loge areas by elevator, but not the top of the duomo.
