The area
Neighbourhood: Duomo
Florentia, as it was called by Latins, is permeated by an eternal beauty spread in all corners of the city. The historic center is characterized by the immensity of the Duomo, able to transport tourists into the brightest age of Florence: the Renaissance. Who does not know the Brunelleschi Dome, San Giovanni Baptistery and the Giotto’s Campanile? Everything is enclosed here and it would be easy to imagine the city as it was in ancient times, with maids walking in the main square and horses carrying coaches. Nowadays, roads are busy with street artists. Rustic Tuscan bakeries give way to fashion shops; just stop for a few minutes in the middle of Piazza della Repubblica to enjoy the colors and sweet melody of the carousel that will bring back great memories from anyone’s childhood.

The Piazza del Duomo in Florence contains the Florence Cathedral topped by Brunelleschi's famous dome along with the Giotto Bell Tower and the Baptistry of San Giovanni. It makes for a truly spectacular sight both day and night. The Brunelleschi Pass can be purchased online that provides a timed entry to climb the 463 steps to the top of the Dome and also provides entry to all the sights at the Piazza del Duomo over a 3-day period. It can get extremely crowded in the area so make sure to visit first thing in the morning to avoid long lines to enter the Cathedral which has free entry. Returning in the evening after crowds have quieted down is also very enjoyable as the Catedral and Bell Tower are beautiful when illuminated at night and the atmosphere is more serene.

This is the public square where you can find the iconic and landmark Duomo, Campanile di Giotto and Baptistry buildings in the Historic Centre of Florence. There are other attractions in the area such as Loggia del Bigallo (museum), lots of souvenir shops, casual eateries and unfortunately massive crowds of tourists as well due to the relative small size of the square where people congregate to visit the Duomo attractions.
If you want leisurely visits wandering the square, visit first thing in the morning prior to the attractions opening and the tour groups arriving. Or pass by in the evening when the majority of people have left and returned to their hotels. However, it is difficult to beat viewing the remarkable buildings here during midday when skies are blue and sunlight shines upon the charming marble patterned building facades.
Note that you can enter Duomo (free) but do expect quite a queue as everyone else is doing the same and they actively try to manage the number of people going inside to see the inner frescos of Brunelleschi's Dome.
If you want to climb the dome to get up close look at the frescos, you need to acquire one of the Duomo Pass tickets that includes this attraction. Passes also include different combinations of access to Baptistry, Duomo Museum and a climb up the steps of Campanile as well.

We travelled by train from Zurich to Florence via Milan a journey which was both comfortable and fast. We then took a taxi from the station to the apartments Palazzo Gamba. The taxi driver was very pleasant and informative.
We had booked a two bedroom apartment which was extremely comfortable and spacious. The apartment overlooked the Piazza del Duomo from which we were serenaded each night by a very talented young opera singer until about 9pm.
That in its self was worth the trip.
We had a lovely 5 day stay in Florence and found the atmosphere and food wonderful.
Everybody we met from the apartment reception to the waiters in the restaurants were very friendly and helpful.
We would certainly recommend the apartments and the Bucca San Giovanni Bucca Niccolini restaurants, the food and the service were outstanding.
To be fair to the other restaurants we visited we did not have a bad meal at any of them. We would certainly recommend the steaks and the local wine.
Altogether a memorable trip.

The cathedral and baptistery around which the piazza sits is probably the most famous sight in Florence and one of the most famous in Italy.
The cathedral with its iconic dome and bell tower are a spectacular sight and accessible with tickets.
The square does get incredibly busy with tourists and as such you pay a significant premium to sit in any of the restaurants and cafes which surround it.

Piazza del Duomo is an area of particular artistic value. You can visit the Duomo for free and without reservation, queuing in the square, otherwise you need a pass for access to all or some of the monuments. The location is central and there are various places and restaurants to eat but also souvenir shops.

Piazza del Duomo is an absolute must-visit when in Florence. The square is surrounded by magnificent historical buildings, including the breathtaking Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, with its stunning facade and iconic dome. The intricate details and grandeur of the Baptistery and Giotto’s Campanile add to the overall splendor of the piazza. It's a vibrant spot bustling with energy, yet you can still find moments of tranquility to soak in the beauty and history. Whether you're an architecture enthusiast or just looking for a beautiful place to visit, Piazza del Duomo will leave you in awe. This concerns the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Flores, a pure wonder of the exterior, of the interior, pass your way without interest and so little to see, what a disappointment. Bans everywhere, no free movement. It's also being repaired.
I was sad on the way out, to see the endless line of tourists who could wait several hours before entering...to....see nothing
Tip: I presented myself with the Giotto pass at the entrance to ste Reparata, which is next to the tower entrance. The entrance was immediate and entered directly into the cathedral. Reminder; decent outfit. It's normal. Too many people go to places of worship as if they were going to the beach... Good visit if you want to see for yourself!

Piazza del Duomo is definitely one of the top attractions in Florence.
The square was bustling with tourists, as expected, and I noticed that restaurants and cafes around the piazza charge a bit of a premium due to the location. However, there are plenty of options nearby if you’re looking for something more affordable.
I was amazed by the sheer number of visitors, all waiting patiently to enter the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Besides the cathedral, the Bell Tower, the Baptistery, and numerous shops and cafés make it a vibrant public space worth visiting.

The square itself is very nice and closes the most important buildings. The problem is that there are always a lot of people, most go only for photos without being too interested in what each thing is. Likewise give a place of obligatory passage, only then they should circulate elsewhere. Florence is not only that and they hinder the environment

Do you happen to know when masses are held on Sundays at the Duomo in Firenze?
Written 30 July 2024
In mid-May, I will be visiting Florence's Duomo in the early afternoon with my 93-year-old father. To avoid the possible long line at the free entrance, I was considering the Ghiberti pass to gain entry into the cathedral through the crypt. Although he can walk without aid or assistance, I was concerned about there being too many steps going down into the crypt and then up into the cathedral. If anyone who has taken this route can offer any advice, it would be greatly appreciated.

Do we need to prebook the tickets for visiting in June ? And do we engage a guide as well ? Meaning is that recommended ?
Written 1 June 2022
Entrance to Floence's Duomo - the Cathedral named in honor of Santa Maria del Fiore
has free public entry. The Cathedral complex, in Piazza del Duomo, includes the Baptistery and Giotto's Campanile. Tickets are required for Giotto's Bell Tower, Brunelleschi's Dome, and the Baptistery of San Giovanni, and they can be purchased at the ticket office in Piazza del Duomo.
Written 2 June 2022
I am visiting on Thursday 21st April and I am purchasing the Brunelleschi Pass. I note that the Cathedral is only open 10:15-12:00 (sadly we cannot make it at this time) and my ticket is from 2:15pm.
When visiting Brunelleschi's Dome and/or Giotto's Bell Tower are you still able to see inside the Cathedral? Also, are the Duomo Terraces accessed when going to the Dome?
Written 10 April 2022
Apologies this reply is too late but yes you can see down into the Cathedral from the walkway around at the base of the dome, but to explore the interior of the Cathedral, you must queue and buy a ticket.

Do you need to abide by the dress code if you are going up the dome and not into the cathedral? It’s over 100 degrees in Florence this week and I thought they might relax on the dress code....
Written 24 July 2019
They do not relax on dress code. I was turned down wearing a high neck sleeveless top in the basilica next to the Duomo. Everything else was covered! I would second the idea of wearing a sundress and something to cover your shoulders. The heat was definitely rough some days.

Alguien sabe de que hora a que hora esta abierto il Duomo y La Academia de arte de Florencia?
Gracias
Written 4 April 2019
Hola Patricia!
Written 19 June 2019
Can i just pay to go up the dome or do I need an all entry pass?
Written 10 January 2019
I was unable to get a reservation for the dome as I was only there four days. You need to be there six days to have access to tickets for the dome if you are using the Firenze card because it is in such demand. Book and pay for it separately if you are intent on doing it. Otherwise, just go up the neighbouring tower - same view.
Written 11 January 2019
Is the dome accessible by wheelchair inside?
Written 5 January 2019
Unfortunately not, keep in mind this building is centuries old and the staircases are even too narrow for two people. You may be able to get to the loge areas by elevator, but not the top of the duomo.
