This little-visited church was one of Florence's most important churches during the Renaissance. Botticelli is buried here, along with his muse, Simonetta Vespucci. Don't miss the exquisite Domenico Ghirlandaio "Last Supper," the very one Leonardo da Vinci admired before painting his.

I made three attempts to go and see this church to get inside but never found it open. It is very quaint from the outside but you need to get opening times to save yourself the journeys I did as it's a 10 minute walk outside of the main attractions.

In my opinion, Ghirlandaio, more than any other artist, symbolizes Florence at its peak. His work (and that of other masters) is on display here in this pretty church. His St. Jerome, on the left wall, is a fine example (note the spectacles on the table). However, in the cloister is Ghirlandaio's Last Supper. What a masterwork this is, with... More

Be careful with the visiting times but if you can visit this church and the burial place of Botticelli and of the Vespucci family. You will see also a beautiful Giotto Crucifix and two Ghirlandaio. However I was disappointed as the Last Supper of Ghirlandaio was closed and I could not see it.

Our hotel was quite a walk from city centre, but one nice thing in those situations is that if you take time and walk and wander, you do come upon some wonderful places and things. Chiesa di Ognissanti was one such place and looking at the outside, it was surprising to enter and see such beautiful works of art within.... More

One of a number of Florence churches which are well worthwhile visiting and which are all within easy walking distance of each other. Added to this, if I remember correctly, it's free so those on a very tight budget who just want to see some examples of fine frescos might opt for this in preference to the more well known... More

We just happened upon this while strolling back to our hotel from the train station. The plain exterior opened to a breathtaking sanctuary.

As we entered this majestic church a wedding was being conducted at the main altar. What such a private moment as this was we respected their space during the ceremony and went back to view the entire church later. (Check for times because this church has varying hours.) The church has a number of altars lining the walls. The paintings... More

Staying in Santa Maria Novella

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Maria Novella
Santa Maria Novella train station welcomes the majority of the people arriving in Florence, which might explain the hectic pace. Commuters and tourists come across the constant hustle and bustle of the station before exiting, taking a few steps and stopping amazed in Piazza di Santa Maria Novella. It is impossible not to admire the the square, housing one of the most charming basilicas in Florence. The area has plenty of local spots to taste Tuscan specialties, but don’t stop in the main streets alone; the narrower side streets always ensure satisfaction. The huge Parco Delle Cascine provides a solution to the need for a green area as well as a historic welcome in the form of a bronze statue of King Vittorio Emanuele II riding a horse.
