You don’t have to climb to Piazzale Michelangelo to enjoy Via di San Niccolò. This area gives you a glimpse of modern Firenze life from sidewalk seating. Or enjoy a fresh, made-to-order Panini as you round the curve. Then select a gelato from a creative array of choices at the shop near the public water pipe. Both are reasonably priced and enjoyable treats before you walk through the old gate to begin your steep climb or don’t!

Having come from Ponte Vecchio, I meandered the back streets heading to Piazzale Michelangelo and came across this interesting street leading to an old fortified wall, before the stairs up to Piazzale Michelangelo.
Florence has so many interesting back streets, Via di San Niccolo amongst the better ones

This road is one block off the Arno River and was the road we walked after crossing the Ponte alle Grazie towards Porta San Miniato. It is a narrow, stone street lined many apartments and the closer you get to San Miniato there are many shops and restaurants
