About
This unique Florentine piazza is the center of the artisan quarter. Dominated by the last masterpiece of Brunelleschi, the Basilica of Santo Spirito, the square is home to little local markets and antique fairs.

It's a place full of life, even during the pandemic it was so vibrant, the restaurants there look like cozy places for a win/ spritz and a quick bite. People were singing music live, everyone was laughing and it was such a cool vibe.

This is where the Basilica of the Santo Spitito is located on the other side of the bridge/arno river. It is a bit secluded area, it is not my first choice for hanging out but did rested here a bit on one of the few benches situated at this plaza.
I found this area a bit unkempt and the trees there need some sprucing up.
Generally it's a low keyed area to chill out without the touristy crowds

There's really nothing going on here. Maybe if you come during a festival or something, but don't bother coming here. It was a long walk out of the way for me and I regret it. It's nothing bad, just nothing at all.

Our hostel was close to this piazza so we went there a few times. It was clean, not so crowded as other squares in Florence and the whole vibe was lovely. I enjoyed the market on Sunday, there were stands of food, flowers, clothes, shoes and jewelry too.

On the ''other'' site of the Arno river you can find this square. It is very popular with locals and therefore especially crowded in the evening. The atmosphere is good and there are a lot of restaurants. The entrance to the church is free but the opening hours are still unknown to me. The square itself doesn't look that special.

Maybe it was because we had just had a rainstorm, but I found this square quite depressing, with few people about, and the cafes not as vibrant or attractive as other squares.

Piazza Santo Spirito is my favorite square in Florence- local farmer/artisan markets at least a few times a week, great restaurants, cafes, plus it has a water fountain and trees!

Especially in high season, Florence can be a nightmare. Even in the recent heatwave queues for major attractions were huge. But a few minutes walk over one of the many bridges will take you into this pretty and relatively peaceful square. Get your timing right and arrive while to small market is operating, or try one of the small restaurants for lunch, a quiet drink in the shade, or dinner. And if it's still too hot (or wet) for you, duck into the Basilica, one of the most important churches in the city.

At the Piazza Santo Spirito are several restaurants with tables set in the square offering something to eat or simply to take a rest with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine after visiting the Basilica Santo Spirito. There is a very clean restroom at the piazza which can be used for a fee of 1 Euro.
The area between the Ponte Vecchio and the Basilica Santo Spirito is worth a visit, normal life with very few tourists.

We visited here on a Monday afternoon to get away from the madness around all the major landmarks on the other side of the river. There wasnt many vendors selling stuff and the stuff that was for sale wasnt very interesting, at least to me it wasnt. There was a produce stand there, one vendor selling random household items (q-tips, band-aids, shanpoo) and another selling clothes. We ate at a fresh pasta restaurant which was good. It's a nice relaxing plaza away from the super touristy sites but the market wasnt very interesting.

My entire second trip to Italy WAS to stay away from the tourist attractions. Wanted to live like an Italian for 3 weeks, and not live like a tourist. Loved Santo Spitito for that very reason.

I guess you are referring to the Basilica di Santo Spirito.
The Basilica has intermittent tourist opening times and when we visited in May these were 9.30AM till 12.30PM and 4.00PM to 5.30PM but these are not always adhered to and the church is definitely shut all day Wednesday.

I'm staying to Florence for three nights in May. I love arty, local, a little bohemian atmosphere and going to rent an airbnb and hang out like a local. IThinking of SAnto Spirito or St Niccolo areas? Any thoughts if this is too far from the main areas. I plan to take a train to Lucca one day.

Santa Spirito is not far from the main areas. At Santa Spirito you can find a good mix of locals and tourists. There are great restaurants over there. On certain days there is also a market.
We loved the atmosphere there.

What time on Sunday would you say is the best to get there?
