Amazing location, beautiful church with a nice bell tower and cloister. Inside you can see a fragment of the Holy Cross and some objects belonged to San Francesco

This is a small historic church. It is worth the climb up both to see the church AND TO VISIT the artist studio outside the church. You will not believe your eyes at the intricate artwork this artist creates!

Constant Companion and I visited Cortona along with our culinary group. It is an Etruscan town almost 2000 feet high up on a hill. All of its streets, except one, are very steep and narrow! There are several sites worth visiting, including Chiesa San Francisco, Duomo di Cortona, Piazza della Repubblica, Piazza Signorelli, and Bramasole made famous in Frances Mayes' "Under the Tuscan Sun". We were impressed by all but were particularly fond of Chiesa San Franciso due to its fragment of the Holy Cross and relics(habit and death cushion) of St. Francis of Assisi!

I found this church fascinating. There is a relic of the Holy Cross on the alter, encased behind glass. You can walk right up on the alter and touch it. A very moving and spiritual experience. There are items, including a tunic, that belonged to St. Francis of Assisi encased in a display case. The church is simple with beautiful artwork and wooden ceilings. A must see in Cortona.

It’s amazing when you see buildings that seem almost untouched for hundreds of years. This is not a super large church by the standards we’ve seen on our trip but is definitely interesting. And having seen so many decorated ceilings the plain timber here is quite a change. Worth climbing to get to.

The recently restored church was built in the 13th century on the ruins of Roman thermal baths. It was built by Brother Elias, the head of the Franciscan order and the successor of Saint Francis. His tomb as well as the tomb of Luca Signorelli, the famous painter from Cortona, are preserved inside the church, which is located very near central square.

One of the most historical churches in Cortona , inside there are various works of art & relics including a fragment of the Holy Cross brought by Brother Elia from Constantinople. There are also some objects that belonged to St Francis od Assisi and the tomb of Elia himself.
