The Museo Diocesano in Cortona- located adjacent to the Duomo- is a little gem of an art museum. Being based in Cortona during the Summer, I never tire of the amazing Italian art on offer here. Fra Angelico's 'Annunciation' is a particular favourite of mine, the colours are sublime, it's setting (in the old church) is simply breathtaking. Creating a... More

Nevermind Fra Angelico's Annunciation but to me Gherardi's fresco at the oratory below the church takes the cake as this museum's most interesting piece. The cycle, seen in the twelve lunettes on the walls, showed the sacrifices offered by characters of the Old Testament, one on each wall. Cristofano Gherardi aka Doceno was Vasari's apprentice. Apparently Vasari limited his own... More

I was amazed to see one of the 3 "Annunciations" by Beato Angelico exposed in this small museum in Cortona. It is an incredible piece of art and is in excellent condition. The museum has other very interesting art pieces by Italian masters.

A small museum next to the Cathedral. Just a few rooms and very variable paintings. Still the room with the Fra Angelico Annunciation painting is amongst the most beautiful art rooms in Italy I have visited. I walked back to it again and again and all four of the walls have paintings that stay with you, moving the heart and... More

It is worth visiting this small museum on the edge of town just for the fra angelico annunciation painting which is extraordinary, but the collection also includes a whole set of signorelli paintings as well as other religious art. Buy a ticket for this at the sAme time as the museum archeologico and get a discount.

This museum had some spectacular paintings, if you are interested in iconic and religious art, all the "favourite" themes are here, a lot of Mary, a lot of Jesus. The audio tour was very confusing, started outdoors and didn't follow the room numbering, we had to give it up. There is a room dedicated to local artist Signorelli, with colourful... More

Cortona is a lovely hilltown, and the central streets are full of fine architectural details. Go to the museo, a small quiet place facing the Duomo, with fine views to the north from the wall between them. You can stare for quite a long time at The Annunciation, noting the fine details and the bright colors, but the overall beauty... More

We enjoy visiting this museum when we are in Cortona. Never tire seeing Fra Angelico's Annunciation and the works of Signoreli or the beautiful Della Robia altar piece. It's a relatively small exhibit but never crowded and gives you the opportunity to really explore and understand the period art. Nice book store and gift selection.

To view, close-up, works which have survived centuries is an incredible experience. To do so almost in private - few other visitors around - is awesome.
