If you happen to be in Taormina (or Sicilia) during the Taormina Film Festival, I highly recommend attending. We were visiting during the week of the festival and were able to get tickets to see the Indiana Jones movie premiere (tickets are also affordable!) Although I'm not a die-hard fan of the Indiana Jones franchise, we thought it would be fun to attend a movie premiere in Italy, especially one taking place in the famous Greek theatre, Teatro Antico di Taormina.

The film festival played the Indiana Jones theme song as people filed in, which paired perfectly with the dramatic columns and the beautiful brickwork of the amphitheater. We were able to walk down to the stage before the movie started; it was an incredible moment, to look out at the cavea, which is carved into the rock, and image performing in front of 5000 spectators.

The only hiccups we ran into with the Taormina Film Festival were:

- Wait to get into the Film Festival was extremely long (over an hour wait). The Event Directors did apologize (as did Harrison Ford!) for the wait so it may have been an anomaly.
- The concession stand is located at the very top of the theater, past all the seats. And there is only one stand that sells snacks and beverages. It was difficult to locate and quite a trek. The majority of customers in line were America because I think the Italians knew they could bring their own snacks and alcohol!
- The seating, although in a beautiful setting, is uncomfortable. I would recommend bringing a blanket to sit on.

But the benefits outweighed these minor inconveniences. We got to see and listen to the main cast members of Indiana Jones (including Harrison Ford!) discuss the filming of the movie (some of it takes place in Sicily). The introduction to the start of the movie was my favorite part; the theater went dark as the screen cover with Indiana Jones' face dropped dramatically, and as the movie trailer started to play on the actual screen, fireworks erupted into the sky and lit up the theatre, it was spectacular!

During Taormina film festival we booked tickets for 8 Euros and watched the premiere of Man of Steel with Russell Crowe and Amy Adams in attendance. The night was wonderfully warm and it was an amazing experience to be surrounded by so much history. We left 30mins before the end to catch a taxi back to the hotel, suggest that you take a cushion as the seating is a touch on the firm side.

They were just setting up for the Taormina film festival and I wish I could have stayed to watch a movie in such a historical site. I can just imagine how magical that would have been. It is very interesting to see and has some great views of Taormina.

We were lucky enough to be in Taormina for the annual film festival last year. There was a great buzz around the town & in particular in the amphitheatre area. We bought tickets for a movie & we enjoyed the experience immensely. It's well worth a visit even without the movie experience.
