Great Painting

I like Caravaggio's work - and this painting is good (but not his best by a long way) - It is said it was done in a hurry, and you can see that. A nice church - and free entry... read more

He stages living tableaux of Caravaggio paintings, and other work (one had been seen by the Pope!) and was happy to show us photos with examples of his work. Church was almost empty when we went, so could admire Santa Lucia painting easily. A few not very enticing souvenirs for sale.

So disappointing to travel all the way from the UK to this church only to find it closed on a Tuesday, despite notices saying it was closed only on Mondays.

Situated right at the end of the Duomo Piazza, slightly recessed is the church of Santa Lucia alla badia. It is an impressive work.

It's a church and an art gallery, too. I enjoyed the beautiful frescoes inside it. Very unique space at the end of a lovely square.

One of the reasons I came to Siracusa was to see this painting. It was well worth the visit. Although poorly restored, it still conveys the passion of the artist's work. The two grave diggers frame the dead body of Santa Lucia, while the mourners surrounding her look crestfallen. The artist places the poor people and the parish priest near... More

Santa Lucia alla Badia is located on Piazza del Duomo, you can’t miss its green door framed by beautiful spiral columns and each side has the Spanish Coat of Arms, above the door are martyrdom symbols of St Lucia, the palm, crown and sword. The understated exterior and simple interior are what make this such a beautiful building. The original... More

Yes a church, but used now as a showcase for the glorious Carravaggio that is front and center above the altar. Currently exhibiting another artist whose work fills the space rather than pews; not sure how long that exhibition is, but the Carravaggio is the keeper...no photos allowed.

Master of light and dark shades throws a picture together for a big feast for Syracuse's big saint ..Santa Lucia...worth seeing on its own...but a contemporary artists work was presented too for free...at the moment...all in a defunct church which has had its day but useful church art on show too

As a Swede (where we, even though lutheran since 1590's, have a huge St Lucia festival) it was special to visit this chiesa. Though every church our place with a Caravaggio is worth visiting. It was beautiful.
