Huge green area at the foot of Monte Pellegrino, born as a Royal Estate in 1798 at the behest of Ferdinand III of Bourbon, on an area of about 400 hectares. Today the appearance is not what it used to be because within the area, in addition to some fractions that have created separate gardens, such as that of Villa Niscemi or the Chinese Building (northern sector), several buildings have been inserted, such as swimming pools, stadiums, racecourse, tennis club, etc.; also for the vast size, and also to allow easy connection from the city to Mondello, the main avenues of the park, which cross it in a south-north direction (viale Diana and viale Ercole) are paved and traveled at speed by cars. However, there are also large clearings and pedestrian paths that make it more than a park resemble a naturalistic area: and in fact today the Parco della Favorita is part of the Regional Oriented Nature Reserve of Monte Pellegrino, an area of over 1000 hectares in total. Exploring this park completely obviously takes a lot of time and generally I do not find it a particularly interesting attraction for a tourist on a visit of a few days in the city (otherwise, the Villa Niscemi and the Chinese Palace already mentioned obviously deserve a mention), while it is certainly a valuable resource for the inhabitants of the city. However, our assessment is based on a limited experience, based on an overall view of the area from the buses that line the western side and a couple of hours of exploration in the northernmost part of the park.

Neglected waste land.
Why you would find yourself here I never know.
A horrible bushland with abandoned dog, horrible thorny bushes and dryness.
There is no amenities, connections or signs of life. It’s like being in the Blair witch project.. just a lot hotter.

To understand something of the taste of secular Palermo we headed north outside the city. The park has a lot of palaces and in the town of Bagheria one has to use imaginative effort to realise the former charm. Walking is the best way to see something of the villas. Villa Palagonia is famous for the marble encrusted saloon and its grotesque sculptures of its walls.. We visited the Museo archeological a rather traditional museum, its high point is a room of sculptures and bronzes.
