Villa Malfitano is a charming mansion hidden in a park in the middle of Palermo. It has beautiful interiors and the staff was very nice!

We were staying in the area of Palermo and I saw this villa on the map. When I looked it up I was very surprised that the man behind it was originally a Yorkshireman- as we now live in Yorkshire it seemed rude not to visit!
We only went to the gardens of the house but still thought it was very impressive and it felt like you were a long way away from the busy streets of the central city.

Built in the 1880s by Joseph Whittaker (was it him or his family that made their fortune in the Marsala wine trade and that also excavated the island of Motya off the coast at Marsala?), this estate was originally in the countryside outside the city but is now at the end of the main road leading out from the city centre into the suburbs. No National Trust in Sicily and the place is beginning to show its age a bit but is still in remarkably good shape. The gardens contain some fine specimen trees and plants and the house contains all sorts of material that were collected by wealthy families in the Victorian era. I was particularly taken by the many examples of fine wood carving in cabinets and in the house structure and also by a collection of carved ivory items. There are also large tapestries to see. We were with an organised holiday tour but apparently the visit is free - you just turn up and enter. Beware parties of school children.

I was very happy that I made the short trip from the city center to this villa. One can visit the ground floor of the villa and gardens. The inside of the villa contains lovely furnishings and beautiful painted walls/ceilings. It will not take a long time to tour the villa. One needs to imagine how the house was back in its day. Gardens are neatly kept but not spectacularly maintained.
To enter: Ring bell outside gate at Via Dante #167. Ring bell at front door of the villa once you walk up the drive. 6 euro entry. To get there: Take #134 bus from Via Dante just beyond Pza Castelnuovo to the #110 bus (ask the driver where to change and get off). The bus drops you off just around the corner from the entrance. From the villa, it is a 10 min walk to Castello Zisa. Take #106 bus back down Via Dante to Teatro Politeama in the city center.

Thankfully Palermo has just in time realised this is another jem! It is run by a trust endowed by the original family, the Whittakers, but it is far from rolling in cash to keep it up.
Do not expect an NT standard of decoration, repair, guidance or cleanliness! But, it is worth going to see and hopefully the more people who do go the better the house can be looked after.
The story of the Whittakers is interesting - research it before you go - nothing at the house! The gardens are just maintained but are protected from ingression by gates and a high wall!
We walked from our accom. on Via Dante but I am sure there is a bus going up this main thoroughfare if the walk daunts you.

The Garden around the villa is lovely. The villa itself is a bit expensive (6 €). It is a collection of art pieces from around the world I think. No explanation was given. you need to ring the bell in order to get in.

Lovely grounds , sadly neglected , villa was closed ....I think it looks like long term closure with sign stating this, shame ! I would love to have seen inside.

Like many places in and around Palermo Villa Malfitano is sadly neglected. If you are passing do enter and walk around as there is no charge. The day we visited the villa was closed, and the grounds were in need for regular maintenance. What was once a grand villa with lovely gardens has been allowed to fall into disrepair.
