If you can squeeze this into your itinerary do it! Prices are reasonable, but check the schedule for days and time. What a wonderful experience. First we had the explanation of the history, the making of the puppets, and information on the production. We were lucky enough to get to see a full play.
There were 2 kids in front of us. It was also fun watching how much they enjoyed the show. Please note explanations before the play were in Italian- we had someone translating for us. They also gave us a preamble about the play in English
(like reading an opera story before the opera). This is a historical cultural item that we hope continues on in Sicily. We loved it all.

Puppetry has been a revered art form in all of Sicily (and not just for kids though they would certainly enjoy it), starting in Siracusa and making its way around the island. The Opera dei Pupi in Palermo is a family business in its fifth generation. The puppets are crafted by hand by the gentleman pictured below, as they were by his father and grandfather before him. His children are the current puppeteers and their children are learning the craft. Forty-five minutes very well spent!!

A traditional art form NOT to be missed! A very personable set of craftsmen and performers! You need to contact Giovanni via email to reserve a show, but he is prompt with his reply and includes directions to the theatre. When he explains that the theatre is behind the Hotel Ibis, it is — but take the small street before/north of the hotel. The theatre entrance is quite colorful, but it’s in a small working neighborhood.
Arriving very early, I chatted with Giovanni in his workshop next door (then went to the hotel for a drink). I found out later that his buddies are the other puppeteers and the “organ grinder.” It is an intimate theatre, but that night’s audience was quite small (SAD!!!) so the “spectacular show” (45-60 mins?) was shortened to a single story (and he would not let me pay him! GRR! ;-)
It was marvelously charming (and humorous at times) to hear the various character voices, watch the manipulating arms, legs, shields, swords, and heads. I remember watching a few puppet shows as a kid (early 1960s in SF Bay Area). “Teatro Pupi” is all about the art of the puppets—the specialized tooling, handwork, tradition, and art. I would love to take my grandkids to this show in the future; there is plenty of straightforward action for a kid to get excited about.
My “forever memory” will be the curtain call when these fine gentlemen leaned in from the side to wave and smile. Grázie mile

Excellent original theatre depicting the true Sicilian puppet show and the history of the puppets. Well worth the visit and my whole tour group loved the experience.

The craftsmanship of the marionettes is amazing and it was fantastic to see the operators come out onto stage with their marionettes after the show. It made you realize how quickly we are adapted to the size of marionettes. The play was entirely in Italian and some felt particularly violent given the number of children in the audience. However, I understand that this was a traditional play and as such appreciated the performance.

Authentic Italian fun, ancient tradition kept on by a puppetmaster who has been doing this for 68 years, and his grandfather and father before him. Now his son is involved as well. Amazing. All in Italian, episodes about the story of orlando, Roland in French, about the knight of Charlemagne and the fight against the Saracens. 12 euro for adults and 6 for children. Pricy, but these people put a lot of effort in it.

After reading reviews decided to go, there were 4 of us, one understood some Italian but the 4 of us didn't understand what was happening. For €12pp it would have been good to have some explanation. I read reviews where someone explains the story in English prior, no one explained anything.
It is wonderful to see this art of puppeteers continuing so felt we supported that & the opportunity to hold one of the puppets after was good too.
it certainly did give us something to talk about later though.

Well as I don’t speak in Italian for me this show was not so impressive. Hard to follow the story as don’t understand the jokes or the text they are saying. Of course the whole thing with dolls is amazing to see. But the show was 1h, for me too long. Price 10£, by at the door only.

A puppet show or Opera dei Pupi is a must in Sicily. There are a lot to choose from and all are good but no one is like the Cuticchio Family. When you watch the puppet show you get so immersed you forget you are watching puppets lol! Even though you may not understand the dialect, the antics transcend words. Highly entertaining! It brings the kid out in all of us. My father as a child used to watch these shows as they came around the neighborhoods when he was a boy in Palermo. I can see why he looked forward to them so much. What I want to know in the last puppet show I saw in September was the soldier who got injured, Angelica? So unfair I can't see the subsequent tale and find out the next chapter!!
