I love Italy and seeing new places. Palermo is one of the places that I liked, but I expected much more, it didn't impress me. The historic center is beautiful with several attractions to see, but I thought it lacked maintenance. We arrived on the MSC Poesía, we only stayed a few hours and we covered everything on foot.

Difficult to define what the "Centro Storico" is, but there are certainly a large number of old streets in the centre of Palermo. Lots of small rambling streets, particularly down towards the Ballero area. Worth bearing in mind that this was traditionally also the centre for the Mafia and crime is almost certainly a risk at night, but seems safe by day

We loved Palermo. Our hotel Mercure Centro was great, comfortable and fantastic location. The city is very interesting with lots to do even tho it was Easter. Not the best town in Sicily, but wonderful just the same

We visited the centro historico before taking a guided walking history and street food tour. We had no idea why there was so much renovation taking place, so many beautiful apartment buildings still in ruins as a result of bombing in World War 2. Until recent years the centro historico was a wrecked area until with the help of the EU it is being renovated in stunning, true historical fashion to become the vibrant area it is today. Tourists throng the pedestrian only main streets alive with shops, cafes, churches, an awe inspiring cathedral, the Royal Palace, countless smaller churches and chapels etc, We visited a large, noisy, very busy market with varieties of fresh fruit and veges, fish and meat unequalled by any we have seen elsewhere. Delicious streetfood too. We look forward to returning at a later date. One visit is not enough!

I stayed a couple of days in Palermo for work and I took the opportunity to take a few steps in the beautiful old town, even if the Sicilian capital would take so long for an in-depth visit.

Leaving aside the beauty of the city... here we live in a climate of anarchy, rudeness (on the road and otherwise) and a sense of dirtiness never seen before.
Leave the car parked as much as possible because you will come across people who won't stop if they see you on the road, wheelchair ramps totally covered by cars, people without helmets... sometimes even three of them, or sketchy cars for parking.
Alas, I expected to find something else... but this is the sad reality... take a walk around and arm yourself with a lot of patience!!!
