This nice square is very popular, not only for tourists but also Sicilians. It’s a lively meeting point. We were there during the St. Agatha’s Festival in Febrary, so it was full of tourists and locals. We bought some traditional candied almonds from one of the stalls.

A nice place for the kids to run around, lots of space and not super crowded unless it's evening. Great architecture to enjoy

When I visited early December the square was marked by Christmas celebrations. Numerous brightly illuminated stalls, families with children buying balloons, performers doing an act, in short a very lively atmosphere especially early evenings.
Few students on university square!

The buildings lining the square are more or less from the same time period (early 1700s) built in Baroque and neoclassicist style after the great earth quake.

Location along via Etnea just 100m north of piazza del Duomo.

A nice square, but nothing worth visiting or make as part of an itinerary. If you walking on via etna it will be there anyway.

The best place for stroll in Catania. The Piazza is surrounded by beauty such as the Doumo church, the baroque beautiful buildings, restaurants, coffeeshops and beautiful fountain. Nice place to sit around the elephant monument and relax while the place provides you with a nice view around the place.

The Piazza della Università is only about 100m north of the other beautiful city square, the Piazza del Duomo. As most of central Catania it is a good spot to study and admire the architectonic style of Sicilian Late Baroque, which evolved after the devastating earthquake of 1693. The place is surrounded by various palazzi, foremost the Palazzo della Università on the western side, today the university's Rectorate, while on its opposite side, to the east, is the Palazzo San Giuliano, on which is written 'Università degli Studi'.

In between the Piazza della Università and the Piazza del Duomo, on Via Etnea, is the grand old café 'Prestipino', a place I regularly came to after dinner for an espresso, a Sicilian dolce and for people watching from its outdoor seating area.

This Piazza sits next door to the Piazza del Duomo but isn’t as impressive. It is a nice Piazza with the university buildings on each side of the square. The university ‘gymnasium’ has an impressive mosaic floor which is worth seeing.
There are a few restaurants in the Piazza but I would have a look around and then move onto the del Duomo.

Reminded me of some of the squares in Rome or Florence
Seemed cleaner and less busy than the Piazza Duomo
Overlooked on opposite sides by impressive university buildings with the equally impressive Basilica collegiata just up a ways
The “Gymnasium” building had a really impressive quadrangle and an interesting (really) exhibition on micro-biology at the time of visiting

This square is just up from the Duomo and is lined with beautiful buildings. Buskers and street entertainers perform here most of the day and evening. Sitting with a drink or meal at one of the cafes is a fantastic way to people watch.
