- Louise V36 contributionsSouvenir rosary from this church is actually from where?Beautiful Church in Catania ,Sicily but... I visited this beautiful Church in Catania and purchased a rosary for a friend of mine. Not even thinking about it since, I brought it home and didn't look at it again until I met with my friend to give her the rosary. Imagine my surprise and embarrassment to find the rosary was not from Sant'Agata, Catania but from Fatima, Portugal. Why in the world would this church sell a rosary from Fatima when I am in Catania?Visited April 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 26 January 2024
- AMsaysThornhill, Canada4,909 contributionsYou're looking good for 938....The building was built over Roman Baths in 1086 but since then it has gone through many renovations, rebuilt mainly because of natural disasters and aggressions. It has been presided over by the French, Swabians, Normans but initially by Byzantine forces who it is believed absconded with artifacts from here that ended up at Istanbul’s Hagia Sofia mosque. The outer façade is topped by a bell tower. Inside there are the usual religious artifacts, statues and beautiful artwork. I was very impressed with the striking flooring.Visited January 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 February 2024
- Ana VEugene, Oregon655 contributionsBeautiful CathedralThis beautiful cathedral is dedicated to patron saint of the city Saint Agatha. The church sits over the ruins of an ancient Roman bath. It looks like you can possibly visit them (entrance is to the right of the cathedral entrance) but they were not open the day I was there. Most of the church was destroyed in the quake of 1693 and rebuilt in the Baroque style. The columns decorating the facade were originally from Roman buildings in Catania. To the right of the altar is the reliquary of Saint. Agatha.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 April 2024

It was originally constructed in 1093 but was destroyed several times by earthquakes and the eruptions of Etna. From 1859 it is the seat of Archbishops of Catania. The two of us didn't have much time to explore the interior (which is more classical than baroque) in detail, but we left the church with the impression that it was somewhat stern and sombre.Visited May 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 April 2024

On Sunday we went to visit it and we liked it a lot. It has remains of the Saint, but you cannot visit the image with the jewels. There are remains of the royal family of the crown of Aragon. On Sunday we tried to see it but we can't. On Monday the cathedral was closed for cleaning. We asked about the remains of the kings and they sent us outside to ask a girl who was at the entrance to the hot springs and she told us to come back on Tuesday. I wrote to the Fe Catania Cathedral and they very kindly explained to me and confirmed how I could visit them on Tuesday at 10:45 on a guided tour. We arrive at the entrance to the hot springs, the person who is there when we tell him what we want to see sends us to number 8 to get the tickets. There it takes us a while to attend because the person who sells the tickets is sorry, he was smoking and he doesn't know what real remains we are talking about, he doesn't even speak English nor does he do anything to help us. A man in front of her is already looking for it on the internet and tells us that he thinks it's inside. It is incredible that 3 people direct us badly and don't even know what we are talking about. Once inside, Federica, for 2 euros per person, very kindly shows us the sarcophagi with the remains. Surreal.

Catania Cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha is a majestic Baroque building. Once inside, take your time to admire the decorative apse, mullioned windows, several statues and beautiful paintings. Also visit the Chapel of Saint Agatha and Chapel of the Holy Crucifix together with the tombs of composer Vincenzo Bellini and various kings. Definitely worth the time.

The cathedral got its present shape during the first half of the 18th century. Baroque and neoclassicism are the main architectural styles applied. As with many religious buildings at the time, the colossal design served to demonstrate the power of the Roman Catholic church. From a present-day perpsective perhaps a bit over the top, but still an interesting structure to observe.

The Catedrale of Catania is located in the piazza that forms the heart of the city. Neesdless to say the interior is very grand. Also located near the front door off to the right is the grave of Vicenzo Bellini - the great opera composer.

Don't miss the guided tour! For a modest six euros they took me alone on a guided tour of the Duomo, in Italian or English, showing you several very interesting places closed to the public: The sacristy with its mural about the tremendous eruption of Etna in 1646, the chapel where the sarcophagi of the Kings of Sicily and Emperors of the Holy Empire Frederick II and Constance of Aragon, the Norman Tower, the only two floors of the tower of the old Norman cathedral destroyed by the earthquake of 1693, and finally in the basement the brief but interesting remains of the once enormous Aquiliana Baths. A very well spent and explained visit.

The cathedral is an impressive building. You will soon realise that most attractions open early and shut at approx 12 and then open again at 3. No lie ins on this holiday, you need to get up early.
The cathedral has some lovely artefacts. When we visited there was a service taking place at the front.
There are lots of art pieces. Well worth a visit.
