About
The archaeological area of San Simplicio Temple Necropolis, the new important museum of Olbia, preserves part of the archaeological excavation carried out during the redevelopment works of the area in front of San Simplicio Basilica. The excavations brought to light about 450 graves of the Roman age (200 BC to 300 BC) representing a stratification of suburban and necropolis worship phases, it crosses the first 2000 years of the history of Olbia, from its birth with the Phoenicians to the Middle Age. The archaeological site, provides a tangible testimony of the ancient town of Olbia, and goes together with the exhibition of findings of the archaeological Museum. Its uniqueness is related to the fact that this site is integrated in the layers of the modern town and the ancient residential area and its necropolis.

Sardinia has so much ancient history- it’s an eye opener really! Only open from 5-8pm with tickets at €5 which includes headphones. Only accessible from car park - don’t wait upstairs as we did at the ticket office there! For some reason this benign ticket office sits doing nothing.
This site was close to our hotel so easy to do however it only consumes about 3/4 hr at most of ones time.
The staff are very helpful and it is displayed well as an archeological site given that it is under a church.

For your information, the ticket office upstairs belongs to the San Simplicio Cathedral museum.
The one and only Necropolis ticket office is downstairs at the same level of the archaeological site and it is open as
follows:

We visited after the basilica and wouldn’t have known it was here but for a visit to the tourist information centre at the bottom of Corso Umberto - it’s well hidden at the back of an underground car park. €5 gets you access to the site and an audio guide which was informative, if not a little dry. Still, the guide was invaluable in helping to learn more about this ancient burial site, the customs and beliefs of the various groups that used it over the centuries and a little of the history of Olbia itself.

After crossing an underground parking lot and arriving at a small door, the necropolis was there. A lady was waiting for us at the entrance with audio guides and headphones. She gave us an Audio Guide and a pair of headphones for 2. The Award of the tour is 5€ per person. The necropolis is quite small and fits only on one room. It is air conditioned but you can see the car park from the outside, which prevents complete immersion. Our Audio Guide was in French which we thought would allow us to understand everything. However, this was not the case. For the rooms described therein and where the graves were were not understood, and all that was seen were vases. After about twenty minutes, the only thing we remember is that a type of grave is called “La tomba alla cappuccina”, but we do not even know what it is. If you’re terribly bored, don’t care about your day, or it’s raining, go ahead, otherwise I wouldn’t recommend.

It was a unplanned visit for us, but worth stopping by. We were not sure if it was acessible for free and it was. Students provided guided tour around historical burial grounds, where you can get a historical understanding of the cultures that were present on the spot. It was proper use of free and guided 20minute stop by. No suprise, that local sardinian staff was really nice.

This is located at the rear of a car park and underground near the San Simplicio Basilica. It is Just off San Gabriele n’Annununzio, opposite the railway station! It’s wasn’t very well advertised. We opened the door at the top of the stairs next to the lift and walked downstairs. The car park office appears to double up as the place to buy a ticket. Tickets were €5 per adult. You were given headphones and needed to use your smartphone on their WiFi signal and scanned a QR code to access the information.
The exhibition itself is clean and well presented. It shows various objects excavated such as a well, graves and walls.
Given it is free to go into the Archaeological Museum on the seafront we didn’t mind paying!! Ok if you have a smartphone.
