After walking through the Castello, we descended through the stairs of the Bastion of San Remi to the Villanova quarter. Although the name of the quarter indicates his youth, in reality this is not the case. It originated around the same time as the Castello. In the XIII century. It was just that it was not a quarter of the nobility, clergy and merchants, but of the peasants who settled closer to the castle. Therefore, if we had come to Cagliari in the XVIII-XVIII centuries, we would have seen houses with vegetable gardens here. The development of the quarter is mainly of the XX century. Here are the historical reasons and the bombing of American B-17s that destroyed many houses in 1943-44. Historically significant buildings are the Basilica of San Saturnino, the oldest church in Sardinia and the church of San Giacomo of the XV century. Actually, for the sake of San Saturnino, we ended up here and went further to the San Benedetto market.

I would say that it is the most beautiful area of the city because the streets are green and it is very nice to walk in these alleys. But some of them are filled with tags. Yet having visited Paris I found that there were fewer tags, so I do not understand why this city is so tagged. Some facades are not maintained. I would advise tourists to visit "Bosa" for example which is a beautiful multicolored city. I think the municipality must make efforts because Cagliari is still the capital of Sardinia.

Cagliari is a great city for walking. The Quartiere Villanova is just one of the charming neighborhoods that you'll find. We loved taking walks in the evening as many people were out. Stop at a cafe and enjoy the ambiance.

Adjacent to the Castello district of Cagliari, Villanova is another area it is worthwhile to wander around. Churches and alleyways, as well as some graffiti! Very quiet when we were there - hardly anyone about.

A great walk through the narrow streets under the towers and Bastion St. Remy, the old city walls are just steps away, as well as panoramic views of the botanic gardens, city park and port.

We went to the San Benedetto market and bought bread, cheese and ham and ate it in one of the small squares here. Great quiet area of town without too many tourists.

Mellow residential area. Have a walk. Discover the city. Sit at a cafe. Look inside a church. It won’t kill you.

We found this area early on because it was close to hour hotel. Lots of choices for restaurants and café’s. There is also some good shopping in this area.
Beautiful street scenes, with flowers and decorations.

We took Via san Giovanna from the centre of Cagliari to reach Mercato San Benedetto, very picturesque street full of flowers, have a look at the market just after the end of the street too
