I was travelling around Europe with Interail in the summer of 1997. I was in my twenties, with long dirty hair, sweaty and half disoriented. I just got of the train from somewhere in Italy and I was looking for the ferry from Brindisi to Patras in Greece and there was little time to go if i was not going to miss it. Suddenly a man on a scooter stopped next to me and asked me where I was going, he probably sensed my plight. I showed him my ticket. He told me to jump on, which I did and with his help i caught the ferry just before it left. After the whole trip through Europe, his friendly approach (to a stranger)is still stuck in my memory. Greetings from Iceland to the locals of Brindisi.

Lovely place but you can do all the attractions in 4 days, unless you hire a car and do the surrounding areas

Our Europcar broke down the day we hired it from Brindisi airport in Italy.
(which in itself was frustrating as the service was incredibly slow). We tried to call the number they provided but no one spoke English!
We were left stranded in a rural area, by the side of the road, and we are both OAPs. We had never visited the area before. We managed to contact the owner of the B & B we were staying in and he came and picture
us. He spoke to Europcar in Italian and they said we should call back on Monday (this was Saturday). We were left without a car and so had to hire one from a local dealer, arranged by our B&B owner. On the Monday, Europcar said we would have to drive back to Brindisi airport to get another car ( about 60 km). They provided another car which we then found had no air conditioning and the temperature in Puglia was around 30c for the 11 days holiday.
We habve received no refund from Europcar for the 2 days we didn’t have a car from them but had paid for in advance, and on arrival home found that Europcar have taken another large payment out of our account without our agreement.
We will never use Europcar again, we are trying to get some compensation.

Brindisi is from Roman times considered one of the most important ports on the Adriatic coast. It's port is set in a pretty long bay stretching inland, dividing the city into two parts.
Like most of southern Italy, it's not that developed with some dodgy and sketchy areas.
From the tourist point of view main attractions are:
- Sailors Monument in the northern part,
- old town area with Duomo Cathedral and San Giovanni Sepolcro Church,
- Twin Roman columns marking the end of Via Appia Antica road with the Lungomare promenade beneath it.
There're no beaches around and the Aragon Castle in the bay is closed for visits due to renovations, so all above can be covered in 3-4 max to plan accordingly.

Such a disappointment!
When I saw some pictures (and certain reviews) of Brindisi, I imagined nice boutiques, little streets, lots of restaurants, etc.
Well...the reality is that there's nothing much to do apart from the museum beside the main square. The city is dirty although some monuments are nicely refurbished.
Go to Lecce, Ostuni or Monopoli!

Lovely place to sit and people watch. Plenty of bars and restaurants. Lovely views. Sometimes live music.

We were so lucky to book an English tour with an guide who was also an archaeologist. Absolutely brilliant! The fort is absolutely huge with different parts and a fascinating history. I could not recommend it enough. So interesting to see a fort with an enclosed mini port and so much in good condition. We walked there along the causeway which was also so lovely.

A good place to visit for just a few days. There are a few touristy bits but not much, so would not recommend more than a 4 days stay
