Beatiful palace built in 1903 by the family Petruzzelli on design of engineer Angelo Cicciomesseri, a great fire damaget it in 1991 which kept it closed for 18 years

To be honest, we almost accidentally found this beautiful building and became intrigued by its splendor and history. The theatre is named after brothers Petruzzelli, Onofrio and Antonio, whose designs were accepted by the city administration in 1986 and was inaugurated in 1903. It was completely destroyed in 1991 by fire and then rebuilt and reopened in 2009, after years of criminal and civil law suits.

We saw the outside to the theatre and read its history and wanted to see the inside, but did not want to pay for a city tour to do so and only had two days here. It turned out that there were a series of performances of Cenerentola (Cinderella) in 1+ hour performance for children. So we went and stood in line to buy tickets as 400 3rd to 5th graders stood in lines with teachers to descend on the Teatro. For 5 euro a ticket we got to go inside, see the whole theatre, listen to sung opera with a live orchestra and experience Italian school kids and parents. A real cultural experience and the inside of the theatre is stunning.

I did not have any expectations about Bari, but when there was so impressed with how metropolitan the city was! The beauty of the harbor and water and locals buying freshly caught fish on the streets. But, when I saw this beautiful theatre, I was so impressed by its splendor.

When I was walking from the railway station to the ferry port, I noticed this magnificent building in the distance and felt so attracted by it splendour that I took a detour and had a close look at it. I am really surprised to read that it was destroyed by fire some time ago as it really seems to be the original structure, I would never say it is a moden "copy". Well done!

This is the 4th largest opera house in Italy. Beautiful interior, but uncomfortable seats unless you are on the floor or in a box.
I've seen opera in New York and London, but the singing and audience reactions here (we saw Tosca) blow them away. It's very interesting to watch the locals, who may be wearing slacks and a polo or a suit and tie/dress.
Tickets are not expensive 15 euros got us to the cheap seats; I think the most expensive was 45 euros.

The opera house was spectacular. The tour guide was Daniela, she was so knowledgeable about the opera house. All questions were answered and some. When in Bari this is a must see. The cost was 5.00 euros.

Unfortunately we did not had the opportunity in visiting inside.
Locate in the new side of town and just at one block from Palace Hotel
The external appearance of this Teatro Petruzzelli is great and been kept well maintained.

I was fortunate to see Il Barbiere di Siviglia at this opera house. It is truly gorgeous, lots of gold, red velvet and marble in the interior, very lush. The opera house burned down in the early '90s and was totally rebuilt. I sat in a box seat, that had seating for 6 people. The front row of seats in each box has typical opera style seats secured to the floor and quite comfortable. The second row of seats in each box, however, has these high backed bar stools, that are not secured to the floor, and extremely uncomfortable. The three of us in the second row of the box could barely enjoy the show due to the seats.

You'd never know it to look at it from the outside, but the Teatro Petruzelli shines like a jewel once viewed from inside. The acoustics are only surpassed by the 5-tier elegance. I recently was seated up high for a piano concert and was amazed at the clarity of sound. They did a great job with the restoration a decade or two ago after a fire. A trip to Bari would not be complete without seeing this theatre- more like an opera house.
