Must to see when visiting the cathedral. The ancient Remains, beautiful mosaics and frescoes. Many info panels in English Entrance fee 3€, but on my visit on Sunday not collected, maybe due to the mass to start soon.

For a small fee you can enter the excavation site under the Bari Cathedral. There are layers of ruins here- Roman ruins, medieval basilica, and even a piece of Roman road. There are plenty of explanatory signs which are also in English. The real standout off the place is the mosaic floor by Timoteo. The border of the floor features animals, fish, and flowers - even squid!

Bari is a walkable city. Enter through the white lacy entrance near the waterfront. to go into the Old City. The port ruins are spectacular but they charge you 10 euros to walk along the city wall. The Basilica contains St Nicolas' tomb and is a well known pilgrimage site. Lots of cafes everywhere, reasonably priced and a Sunday market on the Waterfront.

Sitting underneath the Duomo di Bari, you are transported to Bari's ancient past in just a few footsteps, where Greek, Roman, and Byzantine history sit side-by-side.
The museum is open from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM, with tickets being purchased by a chap at the desk in the entrance to the basement. It costs €3 per person (€2 if you have a valid student card). Please allow an hour, to really see the site.

If you come to the Bari its a must visit. There is no better place to understand the history of the city. A small section of an old roman road has been preserved. Many beautiful mosaics and insciptions can be admired. It is still an insider tip and you will find this archeological site rather by accident.

The Succorpo museum at the Bari Cathedral is one of the best-executed historic sites I've visited.
Before there was a cathedral in Bari, there was a fifth-century Christian basilica, a very early Christian chapel, and a large Roman structure of some sort on the same site.
Since the cathedral was built on the same site as so many other important buildings, archaeologists working in the cathedral basement were able to uncover remnants of all the aforementioned buildings that came before, including a beautiful early Christian terazzo floor and a tiny Christian chapel with an early altar.
The signage (in both Italian and English) does a great job explaining how the carefully-exposed and restored walls, floors, and other structures related to the earlier buildings.
This was much more educational and interesting than other early Roman and Christian sites that I've visited. For just a few Euro, it's certainly worth a visit.

This is worth a visit but not easy to find. First enter the cathedral and then go down the stairs to the right of the altar towards the crypt. Before entering the crypt, there's a small door on the left with a metal gate. If you are lucky, there will be someone there to take your money and let you in. This door isn't always manned even when the Succorpo is technically open. But the ruins and reconstruction are fascinating and the signs are in both Italian and English.

We were on our way out of the crypt when we saw the entry. We almost didn't go in. That would have been a huge mistake. The excavations and archeological remains under the cathedral are astounding. It really pushes home just how old the site is and how many things have been built over each other. It really is a journey back in time. Worth twice the price of admission at least.

It costs 3 Euro per person. The museum is open from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Go early and see the crypt and the frescoes on the main level as well for free. We spent almost an hour admiring the more than 2200 years of history under today's cathedral. The roman road, incredible mosaics, the Greek writing on a marble slab from 2nd century BC are fascinating. Yes it is a hidden treasure.

You can enter he cathedral free and it is a fairly standard building, but if you enter the undercroft, at the bottom of the stairs on the left is a hidden gem.
The museum Il Succorpo ... it was 2 euros to enter and was very well presented with information in Italian and English guiding you through a hidden past of the buildings found under the cathedral, including an intaglio floor and many artefacts.
Interesting and great spot for a break from the sun!!

Ciao a tutti.. Volevo chiedere quanto si impiega a visitare il Succorpo della Cattedrale di Bari. Si può scegliere la visita guidata e anche arrangiarsi? Quanti minuti dura la visita guidata? Grazie infinite!

Il Succorpo si visita tranquillamente in un tempo che va dalla mezz'ora all'ora dipendendo dall'interesse del visitatore. Non sono a conoscenza di visite guidate, ma ci si può tranquillamente arrangiare da soli con le spiegazioni fornite dai numerosi cartelli molto ben fatti.
