Small and ancient. Until the tenth century it was the small church of a nunnery. It then went through various vicissitudes and reconstructions until it became the Scaligeri family chapel in 1200. In the fourteenth century the construction of the family tomb with the Scaliger tombs which has an independent entrance from the neighboring church and which here on Trip has a profile of its own. The visit to the church and tomb takes place independently. The Arches are easier to access, however the church is almost always closed (it usually opens for three hours in the afternoon, on Saturdays and Sundays also in the morning): in short, it is not very easy to go there and be able to see both sites on the same occasion.

Small church next to the Scaliger Tombs in Piazza dei Signori. Originally (745) it was a female monastery which lasted until 1024. Following restoration work, the remains of at least 50 tombs were found next to the church. In 1200 it became the church of the Scaligeri family.

Tucked away next to the Scaligeri tombs, this little 12th century church has the feel of early Romanesque. It has a very intimate feel about it and if you're tired of some of the monumental, highly decorated churches and cathedrals in Italy (particularly of the Gothic and Baroque varieties) it's worth a few minutes of your time. Simple elegance.

At the Scaligeri tombs there is this little lovely church built in the 12. century. It is simple and you can visit it if you visit the tombs.

This small church is located behind the tombs of four members of the ruling Scaliger family, the fifth tomb is embedded in the wall over the entrance. It dates to 1185 when it replaced a church that was destroyed during the earthquake of 1177. The church acted as the private chapel of the Scaliger family. The interior was reconstructed in 1630 but restored to the original design in the 19th century. The exterior is constructed of lava rock and brick in alternating layers and not overly ornamented. The highlight of the interior is the main altar and various statues.

This little12th century church is not always open, so check for timing and plan your trip to come back in because it is a little gem. Ancient and a perfect respite on a very hot day, or even a rainy day. Outside you find tombs from the scaligere family dating back over a thousand years.

Verona has many wonderful, large and ornate churches but I was drawn to visit this small and modest one because of its history and the craziness of putting opulent and over the top tombs right outside it. Sadly the inside was closed when I visited but I got lots of photos of the exterior. Loved it.

Santa Maria Antica is a small Roman Catholic tucked away in the back streets of Verona. The original building was destroyed by the earthquake of 1117, and was rebuilt in 1185 in the tradition Romanesque style of round arches, simple columns and layers of tuff and red bricks. The Scala merchant Family turned it into their private church and the tombs of Cangrande, Mastino II and Cansignorio are considered fine examples of Gothic art. Its courtyard became a private cemetery of the fourteenth century merchants of Verona. The whole interior of the church gives off an air of peace and tranquility. There is a small fee to enter.

We sort of stumbled upon this and we are so glad that we did. It was relatively quiet and we had a nice sit down and time to reflect and say a prayer after lighting a candle. There is also holy water there to bless your loved ones with and some prayer cards that you can take away with you.
