What a beautiful Gothic church with amazing ceiling and ornate detail. This wonderful church was built around 1200 era by the religious Dominican Order. The ticket price was 4 euros per person but you can buy a combo church ticket etcVisited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2024
- westy54Sydney, Australia13,544 contributionsLargest church in Verona. Rather plain red brick facade gives no indication of the beautiful interior riches. This church dates back to the late 13th century when construction began on the site of an earlier church. The building works took just over 200 years with the church being largely completed by 1400 although additional works continued during the next century, however, similar to some other Veronese churches, the facade was never completed. The imposing red brick facade is effectively divided into three sections mirroring the interior central nave and two aisles. The main portal has two doors above which are a number of arches with decorated lunettes. Above the arches is a single rose window. The sections either side of the central facade section, corresponding to the two aisles, each have a very long, mullioned, stained glass window. There is also a belfry on either side. The 72 metre tall belltower was completed in 1460 with four bells. It now has nine. The impressive and richly decorated interior is in the shape of a Latin Cross. The three large aisles are supported by 12 red Veronese marble columns while the cross vaulted ceiling is beautifully decorated as are the ceilings of the apse and the various chapels. The floor is white, black and red. There are five quite lovely chapels in the transept that contain a number of important works of art and frescoes. The main altar is quite impressive. It has four large columns and contains a 15th century work of art of "Our Lady enthroned between St Thomas and St Augustine". Also of note is a 15th century fresco by Pisanello titled "St George and the Princess" which is in the Pellegrini Chapel and the woodwork in the choir of Giusti Chapel. What also caught my attention was the hunchback figure holding up the Holy Water stoup. Well worth a look. Single entry cost was EUR4-00 or you could buy a ticket that would allow entry to four churches, including the Duomo, for EUR8-00.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 July 2024
- Brown_SamanthaKennewick, Washington1,829 contributionsThe largest basilica in Verona with incredible architecture and history - it is a must seeWe visited 3 churches while staying in Verona, this by far is the largest and the most impressive. As part of the Verona Pass sights, the entrance is already "included". While the entrance and exterior were not as stunning as the other churches we've seen on our trip, the interior will definitely blow you away! It turned out to be massive. Some of the things we really enjoyed: the red Verona marble columns. The tri colored flooring. The two hunchback figures, one of which attributed to Paolo Veronese's elder son, Gabriele Caliari. Many beautiful chapels throughout. Definitely worth the 1 to 2 hours we spent here, especially nice on a very warm afternoon in Verona.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 July 2024
- phat_dawg_21Alpharetta, Georgia17,369 contributionsBeautiful BasilicaThis was the first church we visited with our Verona Pass. We were impressed by the beautiful ceilings and the inlaid marble floors. There are several chapels with intricately carved terracotta walls and other decorations. One notable feature are the two hunchback figures. In Italian folklore, The Hunchback is considered to be a good soul who personifies humility and hardship; and for that reason, they are often thought to bring good luck. To touch the Hunchback’s back is considered good luck. They are often depicted supporting the basins containing the holy water.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 August 2024

Well worth a visit.
You can buy a single ticket for this church or a combines ticket to visit several churches.
There is a "free" audio tour available via a QR code for smart phones.
Its truly impressive and visitors are provided with a descriptive leaflet and map of the church with all the relevant detail in short numbered paragraphs.
It also offers a place for reflection.

We visited the Basilica paying an entrance fee of €4 each. I wanted a guide that I would have paid for, but the only option was to scan the brochure with the QR code to get the audio, which I then considered not suitable for my needs. From the outside the basilica says little, but inside it is a wonder that leaves you enchanted.
As soon as I entered, I was struck by the large naves and the 12 red marble pillars of extraordinary grandeur, then I got lost in the beauty that was all around me and which I only wanted to photograph in a small part.

Nice and impressive gothic church built by the Dominican Order. The first stone was laid in 1280. The facade is unfinished but it has a beautiful portal which consists of several works of art. Directly inside the church, you can see two odd stoups called "i gobbi"; grotesque hunchbacks that carry the heavy vessels with great effort. The Romanesque interior is richly decorated with frescoes by Antonio Pisanello and the Giusti Chapel with an old, exquisite choir stall. Churches, especially in Italy, also function as art museums and in this case you only have to pay a small amount of 3 Euros.

The antithesis of the typical Jesuit church. The lovely ceiling, the star of the show, is elaborate, yet has a light feel and definitely does not feel the least bit gaudy. It’s a relaxing atmosphere. And I love all those huge columns. By the way, this has a strong whiff of northern Europe influence, as it looks more like a Swiss or a German or even a Sud-Tirol church than let’s say Florence or Rome. You will probably spend only at most 15 minutes here, despite it being a large church. So there’s excuse for not going.

This is another beautiful church in Verona. The horse and rider sculpture on the side of the altar is brilliant. The chapels are beautiful and the ceiling is gorgeous. It looks smaller from the outside. This is one of 4 great churches in Verona and you would want to see all 4. If you enter this one first ask for the combo ticket for all 4. The cost is €8.00 for the combo or €4.00 to see one.

Very beautiful and particular is the Basilica of Sant'Anastasia with the ceiling in the shape of an overturned ship's hull and the lower Church in which there are ancient frescoes. We found it interesting to follow the route with the free audio guide found on IZI Travel. We recommend to make the ticket that includes a visit to the four main churches of Verona.

It is the largest basilica in Verona. It is located at the end of the decumanus and then near the bend of the Adige river. The construction and completion work took about 300 years although it was inaugurated in 1471.
It has a beautiful Gothic portal with frescoes in the lunettes and bas-reliefs. The church has a facade never completed. The bell tower is particular in its shape with 4 three-light windows and 4 bells.
The interior has 3 naves with many frescoed chapels or bearing sculptures by Veronese artists of the thirteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
Beautiful the floor in Verona marble and Istrian stone attributed to Pietro da Porlezza.
Spectacular is the fresco by Pisanello that reproduces the meeting between the princess and Saint George.
Externally the deconsecrated church of San Pietro and the ark of Guglielmo da Castelbarco, one of the main patrons of the foundation of the basilica.
The church is part of the tour of the 4 main churches of the city.

Incredibly beautiful church with jaw-dropping artwork from the 14th century onwards. Numerous side chapels showcase the work of many well-known sculptors and painters. I found the massive scale of the artworks, their age, and the quality of the artwork from over 600 years ago to be a stunning and humbling experience.

Buongiorno
