About
It's no wonder that this is one of the most historic and picturesque squares in Italy: in antiquity, it served as a Roman forum; today, it contains many historic buildings, sculptures with a popular and colorful market overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables.

The name translates into "square of herbs" It is rich in history and architecture. When we visited there was a small and interesting market. The square is surroundedby bars and restaurants. I enjoyed sitting at one, with a glass of wine, and watching the world go by.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 January 2024
- Michael MReno, Nevada139 contributionsThe best Piazza in VeronaThe best Piazza in Verona. Take the trip up the Lamberti Tower, elevator or walk. Free to 1 Euro. The art museum at the north end is fantastic. There are many cafe's to sip wine and or eat. Very Italian!Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 June 2024
- westy54Sydney, Australia13,405 contributionsLovely Piazza spoiled a little by the market stalls. Formerly site of the Roman Forum. One of several lovely Piazzas in the middle of Verona. This one is surrounded by some lovely buildings including the Casa Mazzanti, with its frescoed facade, the Palazzo Maffei and a number of others. There is a great restaurant in the bottom of Palazzo Maffei surprising called Restaurant Maffei. There are some interesting attractions in the Piazza including a fountain and a column with a statue of a lion. I thought the market stalls detracted from the scene.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 July 2024
- Brown_SamanthaKennewick, Washington1,783 contributionsLovely piazza full of fountain, statue, ancient buildings surrounded by restaurants and market vendorsThis is a great natural "meet up" point with our friends. Most days many souvenir stalls were present, but on Sunday, they removed them all. That is when we really came to admire all the amazing landmarks here. Can't miss the imposing Torre dei Lamberti and the frescoed Mazzanti Houses. The tall white marble column with Saint Mark's Lion. There is a fountain with the Madonna Verona (dating to 380 AD). We browsed through the market, got some inexpensive leather goods and small souvenirs. Also took in some dinners here, lots of restaurants, bars, cafes, and gelato shops. A great way to spend some time here. Can always find shade too.Visited June 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 13 July 2024
- phat_dawg_21Alpharetta, Georgia16,976 contributionsBeautiful PiazzaThis large piazza is surrounded by architecturally interesting buildings, many with porticos and painted decoration. The ground level of these buildings houses shops, restaurants, and cafes. It contains a number of points of interest, and hosts a market in the morning.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 August 2024
- futtock21London, United Kingdom17,223 contributionsOnce a Roman forumPiazza delle Erbe is the largest square in Verona’s historical city centre. It is enclosed by the Palazzo del Commune, the seat of local government and the site of civil and criminal and courts under Venetian and Austrian (Hapsburg) rule, the Palazzo Maffeii, in front of which stands a white marble column surmounted by the Lion of San Marco, symbol of the Republic of Venice, as well as two towers, the Torre del Lamberto and the Torre del Gardello. The oldest statue is of Roman origin known as the. Verona Madonna. It is today what it has always been, a market place and meeting venue. It has a plethora of lively bars and restaurants.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 August 2024
- 123pixFalmouth, United Kingdom564 contributionsLively square with a great atmosphereCentral historic square, linking to quite a few other important historical areas. Very popular area, has a daily market, surrounded by shops, restaurants and even a KFC! In the evening the square is cleared and a great place for a meal or drink. The Casa di Giulietto is also just off the square, you probably see the queue, but it moves quickly.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 September 2024

You pass by here often enough, so why another review? For the information that it is crowded 80% of the day and the 'insider tip' is early morning and especially SUNDAY morning: there is no market! If you are here over a weekend, you shouldn't miss this atmosphere.
I discovered this when I was getting a bread roll; even the phalanx of restaurants on the side are still closed then.
In the middle is a stone platform that in olden times had markings - still visible today - for comparing the dimensions of the goods sold (e.g. inch, foot, double step) ... and also served as a pillory. Decorative fountains and statues complete the architecture of the piazza.
In the evening you can sit there to eat or drink with the admittedly nice view. An alternative to Piazza Bra.
It would be nicer on normal days if there weren't just more than a dozen stalls with tourist stuff here. But admittedly, fresh food would probably not survive long in the summer heat - and at least the souvenir stands are concentrated and do not block the beautiful street views.

Near Juliet's famous house in the heart of Verona, Piazza delle Erbe shines, an enchanting setting where there are fixed market stalls and many places with outdoor tables where you can spend pleasant hours. We had an aperitif, good with lots of nice appetizers, the places are all good, it's worth visiting them all. Average prices. In the northern part of the square there is a building that can be visited where for a few euros you can go up to the roof terrace where you can enjoy a splendid panorama of the whole of Verona.

The best piazza to see and explore in Verona.
With stunning buildings surrounding square it’s really awesome to see, inside square there is a variety of market stalls (not the best to buy things) including a nice water fountain and some statues.
Around the perimeter of square are many restaurants that have nice quality food and variety had lunch and dinner in Square during my few days in Verona.
Try to experience Piazza in the day and night as you get a great contrast with square lit up at night.

As others have mentioned, this square is right in the thick of Verona's old town so you can't miss it. During the day it is bustling with tourists at the bars and shops, or queueing to see "the" balcony.
At night there is a brightly lit market, with some well placed uplights on the surrounding buildings that make this place feel quintessentially Italian.

Crowded by the typical and colorful market with various types of products, from clothing to leather to food and crafts. There are many bars and restaurants with terraces. The great protagonist in the center of the square is the fountain with the Roman statue of Madonna Verona. With the Christmas markets even more beautiful and evocative even if crowded on the weekend. In front of Palazzo Maffei there was a beautiful Christmas tree sponsored by Bauli.

Not far from Juliet’s balcony, a good place to find food after visiting. Many stalls selling food & produce, as well as numerous restaurants. We bought delicious pizza slices from a deli and strawberries from one of the market stalls, and ate in the marketplace. There were many stalls selling tasteful souvenirs such as ceramic items, murano glass and summer clothing. The buildings and monuments in the square were beautiful and well worth photographing. The highlight of our trip to Verona!

The central point of the city occupied by souvenir stalls in the center and restaurants on the right. In the center there is the nice "sedan" and on the right Casa Mazzanti with the frescoes on the facade. The Lamberti Tower stands out above. Crowded at any time. Connected to Piazza dei Signori via the Arco della Costa with a whale rib at the top.

So sorry, just got this message. I don’t remember the names of shops in the piazza. Hope you found your scarves. I’m in Bologna this week. 😊

Hi we are not sure as we took a train from Milan to Verona. It's best if you find parking across the Elbe river as it is only a short walk to the Piazza. hope this helps you.

what times are the markets held?
Written 11 July 2017
Si può prendere un autobus che dalla stazione va a Porta Borsari (via Diaz) e da lì procedere per corso Portoni Borsari e, proseguendo fino alla fine, si arriva in piazza.

As a public square it's always open. Because vacation, I expect more tourists and for this reason I believe bars and restaurants would be open. Probably museums but it's better to check on Verona website
