Accessed via the Battistero lobby and excavations of the original church, one reaches the single nave of Chiesa Sant' Elena. originally built in the 9th Century it was rebuilt after an earthquake in 12th Century. In simple Romanesque style, the main entrance is thought a short portico ( accessed round behind the Duomo ) and which contains a tablet inscription by Dante Alighieri.
Wooden choirs were added later but there are notable niches and a triptych of the Madonna and Child with St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist.
A sizeable opening in the nave floor allows the viewing of the old basilica's foundations.

This visit is not only to the church, but, in fact, it's a complex of the Duomo, where you can visit the Baptistery, Archaeological Excavations, Sta. Elena Church and the Cathedral interior. You are charged 2.50 euros visitor fee, which is well worth it! This complex is very interesting and amazing! The cathedral was undergoing extensive restoration when I visited.

the small church is located in the center of Verona, exactly next to the cathedral, both the inside and the outside are nice but nothing fabulous

Built and then rebuilt between the 9th and 12th centuries with restoration works also in the following centuries, we visited it by entering directly from the Verona Cathedral immediately after the ticket office; we found early Christian and Romanesque remains (paving stones, columns and mosaics) and then, in the more modern part (perhaps Renaissance) the actual church with the altar and some works (paintings, ornaments and religious vestments); very suggestive, although very different from the adjacent Cathedral.
