Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

The Wagner Rooms at the Palazzo Ca'Vendramin Calergi do not contain all the rooms occupied by Wagner during his final months, but they do contain the room - overlooking a small garden and the Grand Canal - where the Master died. The spot is garlanded with flowers and laurels, I was moved to tears to be present in that space; the fact that they were playing a recording of the Tristan prelude may have contributed.
The collection here is most of memorabilia relating to Wagner's time in Venice rather than actual manuscripts or original objects belonging to him: nevertheless it is a hugely impressive and atmospheric collection, very strong on artwork inspired by him. I would have liked to spend much more time in each room communing with his spirit; the guided tour, though excellent, did not really allow time to look at everything in sufficient detail.
This is however the only way to see the rooms, and must be booked by email, which we did via the details on the Museo Wagner page of the Casino di Venezia website. We arrived outside the palace gate at the agreed time; another small party was also waiting and it all worked very smoothly. Do not, however, try to explore the rest of the Casino complex that now occupies the palace; I went out onto the canal landing stage (used by Wagner as the main entrance; he had a personal gondolier) and was barked at by Casino security staff.

We booked by e-mail for a guided tour. It is not generally open to the public. Wagner's apartment is on the upper floor of the Casino on Calle Columbina, easy to find
from the vaporetto stop for the casino on the grand canal. There is no charge, but we left a donation after a very detailed tour. The guide was a wealth of information and there was much to see - letters, paintings etc. I loved the view of the canal from the window, knowing that Wagner walked through this garden every evening to his favourite gondolier, in order to be taken to cafe Lavena on St Mark's Square. No photograph's allowed. Much of the furnishings are not Wagner's, but there is a piano dating from the period which may have been played by him. You must book at least a week in advance. Tours required and offered in many languages. It feels a bit dusty and musty, but is great for Wagnerites, though none of the furnishings were Wagner's. He died here, in his modest 18/room rented flat.

We had a lovely "Classic" room, overlooking a courtyard. Comfortable apart from the heat from the towel rail making the en suite like a sauna! There was also some referbishment going on the apartment above our room but the hotel couldn't control that. The breakfast was brilliant with choices of cereal, toast, fruit, bacon and eggs, ham and cheese and cakes and tarts. Sets you up nicely for the day, whatever your choice.
