Neighbourhood: Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

Be aware - there is no mass here on a Sunday any more (at least when we visited). But a beautiful church to go into - a piece of tranquility in a busy area

Small church like any other. in a city like Venice, it is nothing special. It is blended in tiny streets with other buildings

On Sunday, September 2nd we tried to go to an English mass at San Zulian Church at 11:30am but it was canceled due to some sort of holy day. However, we enjoyed the alternative option---a 12:00pm Italian Mass inside St. Mark's Basilica. Still, it was nice to see San Zulian; it's a nice, quaint church that isn't far from St. mark's Square.

While out shopping one afternoon, I stumbled onto this beautiful little church. The front doors were propped open, and daylight flooded the church. It is richly decorated in shades of burgundy and gold. Old wooden pews - one stamped with the date 1808 - grace the church.
There are a couple of small side altars on either side of the main altar. At the front of the left altar is a beautiful statue of Jesus being carried by the angels after his crucifixion. Other items of interest to me were the carved marble ceilings and archway over the main altar. They are stunningly beautiful.
The church is quite small and you can pretty much see the entire inside within just a few minutes. It is worth the visit, though and makes for a nice, peaceful respite from the deluge of tourists in the area.

Just above the door sits a bronze statue of Tommaso Rangone, who was a wealthy physician and benefactor of the church. The sculpture was once thought to be the work of Sansovino, but has now been attributed to Alessandro Vittoria. You could miss this church as it is sandwiched between other buildings and is almost hidden. It sits on the Merceria, the main shopping street in Venice. It is richly decorated on the inside.

Our hotel was actually overlooking this lovely old church , so I was able to get a photo from our window. .
Tucked away in a corner just to the side of St Marks Square if you enjoy looking at churches it's worth a visit.
There is some beautiful art work inside .
Most people would walk past on the way to other more well known sights but if you have time do stop to admire it both inside and out

St. Zulian (San Zulian or San Giuliano) was martyresd with his wife, Basilissa in the year 302, during the persecution of Christians by Emperor Diocletian. While there are several churches dedicated to St. Zulian throughout Italy, the church of San Zulian in Central Venice is one of the oldest, said to have been completed around the year 832. Destroyed by a great fire in 1,205, it was rebuilt and remodeled again in 1,553. The Romanesque structure has acquired Renaissance features over the centuries. The structure has a single, rectangular nave, with two small side chapels. An excellent organ was installed in 1764. The art it houses is a collection over multiple centuries, including work by Paolo Veronese. A cycle reflecting the life of Christ, including the deatails of the passion provides a treat to the eyes of any art lover. The main altar is elaborately decorated and over it is the Coronation of the Virgin by Gerolamo Santacroce. The facade includes inscriptions in Latin, and Hebrew. Greek. A stone sculpture of Tommaso Rangone, a famous phisician and philosopher who provided resources for the remodeling in the 16th centurey

This pleasant church San Zulian is located right behind St Marks and we only discovered it by accident when we got lost in Venice. It is very beautiful inside but still crowded with the overflow of tourists from St. Marks Square

If you need reminded that churches are living buildings and tourist attractions then falling in here does the trick. Tucked to the side of Piazza San Marco this little church had stunning altar and wall coverings but with the freshness of recent incense still hanging in the air when I visited most of all it smells of centuries of honest piety and ordinary faith

We will be in the area on Sunday, October 2, 2016. Does La Chiesa di San Zulian offer a Mass in English? If so, what time?

From what I understand there is an English speaking priest, but we didn't have him. The mass we were at was in all Italian.
I don't know when the English speaking priest does a mass, I'm sorry.
