We only found the market just before closing (11.40) but it was still great. Wander past the busy Rialto bridge to find it. All the stall holders were friendly and it didn't feel intimidating in the slightest being a tourist. We bought some delicious strawberries from a stall with about 8 other Venetians buying their fruit and veg. We felt... More

Rialto vegetables and fish markets are open Tuesday to Saturday . The fish market is open early and till 12 while the fruit and vegetables market keeps it open till about 13.30. The markets are along the big canal North West to the Rialto bridge. I was disappointed to see how small is the market area.

Visit in the morning and try to get there as early as you can. This is a real food market for local people but with lots of great photo opportunities. If you love food dont miss it. Fresh fish fruit and vegetables as well as sundried tomatoes porchini mushrooms and spice mixes to take home. Linger a while to have... More

Go early and see where the locals buy their fresh produce, It is not a large market compared to those you can find in other European cities, but Venice is not particularly large either. The fish stalls in the arched hall are impressive

Get up early and wander round. Nice insight into what the locals buy, lots of fresh fish and veg. Sun dried tomatoes and porcini mushrooms can go back with you. Calamari might be a challenge in the suitcase ☺️

I LOVED seeing the Rialto Market. It's a tiny slice of local Venetian life. Unfortunately, I arrived just as many stalls were closing. Had I visited for a longer time, I would have loaded up on fresh fruit, sundried tomatoes, and other snacks for my hotel room. As it was, I enjoyed taking pictures of the nuns shopping and the... I was looking forward to this market but was let down by it - the much famed Mercati di Rialto was little more than a handful of street stalls in a quiet piazza.

We so love this very busy very local area of the city. What better way to have a food tour than at the famous market in the heart of the bustling Rialto district of the city. Mingle with locals or restauranters doing there daily fruit/vegetable shopping, like Venetians have been buying their food for centuries, you will see things here... More

Staying in San Polo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
