Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

This was near our hotel, so we wandered here often for meals, snacks, and people watching. I loved the atmosphere of the Campo. Everyone was friendly, families and students were out enjoying life, and it was lively without being too crowded. Now that vacation is over and I'm back at home, I've even looked up apartments to rent there, dreaming of living abroad for a year or so, lol.

Lovely vibrant square that is always buzzing with life. Perfect place for crowd watching or just to sit on a bench if you are lucky and chill.
We had to cross the square from our hotel to most tourist places so passed it pretty much a few times a day and loved the vibe each time

Quaint litte piazza in the maze that is Venice. It is a traditional square cobble-stone town plaza surrounded by cafes and restaurants. They cater to the University crowd and as such, have a real youthful and festive atmosphere.
Greates Pizza I have ever tasted in my life for about 1.5 euros a slice. You'll know it by the lineup out the door, but the line moves very fast. Good beer prices in this Piazza'a cafe's too. Small beer garden tents are setup in the middle of the Piazza.

Lived in the area for about a month, Campo Santa Margherita is great for people watching (true) but if you plan to rent or stay at a hotel in the area, my observations follow about Campo Santa Margherita and environs:
Best place to eat there is the AL BOCCON DIVINO OSTERIA CICCHETTERIA on the west side of the Campo on the corner of Calle del Forno. they sell cicchetti (small snacks) of fish (try the "sepia" grilled cuttle fish or the "polpetta al tono" [disc shaped "meat ball" of tuna and olive - both excellent]), meat, small sandwiches etc. (think of chicchetti as Italian Hors d'oeuvre for about Euro 1.5 each), wine (the house red or white "vino di casa" is about Euro 1.20) or Venetian Spritz (a student favorite which is 1/3 Campari or Aperol, 1/3 Prosecco and 1/3 Aqua Minerale Frizzante or bubbly mineral water).
A famous Venice pastry shop (pasticceria) Il Tonolo, is a 2 minute walk away (walk to the north west side of the Campo down the Calle heading north, over the bridge, veer to the right along Calle S. Pantalon (to the right of the church if you are facing north) and at the corner of Calle S. Pantalon and Calle Crosera is Il Tonolo on the left hand side (get a pastry with zabaione [zabaglione] in it, you will not regret it). They have some great pastries and local Venetians consider it the best pastry shop in Venice (true but I also like Pasticceria Dal Mas north east of the S. Lucia train station on Rio Terra Lista di Spagna - about 400 ft. from there). Across from Il Tonolo and within 50 feet in either direction are restaurants which seem very good as most of the time you find local Venetians eating there at night (I did not go to these as when I wanted to go, they were usually packed with the locals and some tourists).
If you turn right at the corner of Calle S. Pantalon and Calle Crosera where Il Tonolo is and walk towards Hotel Tivoli or Albergo Pantalon, on the left hand side just before the Albergo Pantalon is a GREAT PIZZA PLACE where the pizza is actually made by Italians, much better than the pizza shops in Campo Santa Margherita and area which have scant ingredients on them to keep them cheap for the students that frequent Campo Santa Margherita (University Ca' Foscari is not far from the Campo - so students hang out there frequently). They also have great Focaccia sandwiches and Calzone - ate there many times (well, did take-out).
When it is liveliest in the Campo is during the school year and on Wednesday and Saturday nights starting at about 19:00 (7 PM). The Campo is just jam packed with students. They love to hang out at the north west end of the campo, in the Calle leading to the bridge at a couple of chiccheterie which are OK but nothing like BOCCON DIVINO - I believe they are a bit cheaper but you do get what you pay for and their food selection is scant compared to BOCCON DIVINO. Then again, they are students and on a budget.
Most of the restaurants on the east and south side of the Campo are OK but that is about it.
If you are going to live in the area, there is a handy supermarket (by Venetian standards) named Supermercato Punto Simply where you will find a wide variety of foods and dry goods at a decent price, I went there frequently to do my shopping. If you need other types of dry goods (e.g., towels, detergent, soap, power converters, razors, tooth brushes etc.) there is another store on the north west side of the Campo that sells this called the Minimarket Soveco, they have reasonable prices as well (for Venice).
I did not like some of the bars in the area like Skilla Bar and on the south side of the Campo, generally stuck-up people would hang out there or unwitting tourists looking to get ripped off on pricing, Venetian style.

Spent time here in the mornings for coffee and afternoons for drinks - great people watching, variety of restaurants & cafes, and a gelato shop where you can get a cone for 1 euro! Highly recommended. Particularly enjoyed cafe rosso and Orange for afternoon drinks.

On the Western side of the Grand Canal, just under 1 km from Piazzale Roma, this small pleasant square (even with some trees) offers space to socialize with different kinds of local people. University Ca Foscari is not far away and still local life as it used to be, flourishes. Elderly people on the benches, children playing, some local shops and cafés, but also many tourists who want to escape the crowds.

Just came back from our wedding anniversary for 3D/2N in Venice. From the moment we arrive, the hotel, the restaurants, the attractions, the music and arts, mode of transports, maps and getting lost, were amazing and majestic. Not until our last night, when it was all ruined by an ignorant waiter from CAFFE within the Sta Margherita Square named ALESANDRO.
We just came out of Venice Jazz Club after listening from a late entrance but superbly well toned jazz music. We had a few drinks while we listened until it closed at 11pm.
After that, we walked thru the square (Sta Margherita), passing by a kebab shop and bought some before drinking. We sat at one of the tables placed in the middle of the square and was eating our kebab.
Then all of a sudden a voice just appeared in a very offensive tone. He said, any English? Then came these harsh words of "is this what you do in your country", "this is no ordinary park". I thought he will ask us for our orders? He had us for a moment but then again my wife was so upset, has stop eating her kebab and threw it in the bin. She then told me to talk to this ignorant waiter.
And next was history, we spoke to him in a very well modulated tone that the way he treated us was unacceptable. His apologies was too late, but better than never.
His command of the English language was very poor, unlike my 5 year old son can speak way better than him. He got his English lesson as well as some manners.
Yes Venice is indeed a tourist spot but those who cater for service-oriented establishments should be aware that they will not have this spot if not for the tourists who come and spend their money here.
Always remember, IGNORANCE IS THE WORST ELEMENTS IN ANY SOCIETIES.
His name is ALESANDRO from the CAFFE BAR.

Just back from Venice and one of our best finds was Campo Santa Margherita. Once we found the place we went back most days, at all different times.
Just sat in the square and definitely ate the pizza. Best little pizza shop: Pizza Al Volva, the pizza was massive, the price cheap, the music playing at the time was Bob Marley. What could be better?
We loved it and recommend you should go and try it, and not just the pizza but the whole atmosphere of the sqare we loved.

If you're traveling in Venice, no doubt you've been in the San Marco area and have felt the crush of the tourist hordes. You imagined a quieter, gentle, more intimate and beautiful Venice where you could experience a little slice of what real life in Venice is like. Leave your San Marco location and come over to the Dorsoduro side, and make your way towards Campo Santa Margherita.
This is a large square with a few cafes and restaurants, some benches - just a nice quaint spot to get away from the maddening crowds. It's definitely a spot for locals and for students from the nearby university, so it's much more chill than the San Marco area. And the bonus: the restaurants here are actually pretty good as far as Venice restaurants go. Have a cocktail or lunch/dinner or use it as a resting spot before exploring the Dorsoduro area further. At night it's also a lively spot, but not for the masses of tourists traveling in groups of 30: it's mostly local. Mark it on your map or your phone before heading to Venice. You'll like it here.

We came across this campo quite often on our walks; it's really big and there's always something going on. Each morning you can buy fish and vegetables here on the market stalls. However, on Saturday mornings the place is covered in market stalls selling bric and brac mostly but lots of other things too. There's always some kind of entertainment going on. Certainly worth passing half an hour or so.

Hello, I am visiting Venice soon and my hotel will be in Campo Santa Margherita. How do I get there from the airport? (Venice Marco Polo Airport). I know taxis are available but I wanted to know if there are buses that are available that will take me directly there.
Thank you
