About
Recommended by the New York Times in the article "36 Hours in Venice," Venice Music Project presents its fourth season of concerts, taking you back in time to the era when Venice was a musical center of international prestige. Together, we will discover the great tradition of music in the Veneto, performed with original instruments and performance practices, in the prestigious Palazzo Rota Ivancich, where Hemingway and Liszt were among the many important guests. Our resident orchestra, Venetia Antiqua, will also host prestigious ensembles from around the world. An important part of our mandate is the restoration of the places where we perform and the works of art that they contain, to help the city to remain alive for our own and future generations. This will be possible through our US501c3 non-profit organization, Friends of Venice Music Project, our Italian Associazione Culturale for European donations, and additionally a portion of box office receipts.

This unique ensemble provides a concert experience not to be missed. Their mission is to bring back to life music that has not been heard in hundreds of years. The exemplary musicians perform on copies of original instruments, which allows the listener to hear the music as it would have sounded so long ago. I have been to numerous concerts of theirs and the program is always interesting and includes composers I had not heard of, as well as the favorites - Vivaldi, Handel…
You will hear beautiful singing and wonderful instrumental pieces. They perform both spring and fall, so I encourage to attend a concert of theirs, you will be very glad you did.

What a transformative evening and I’m pleased to have discovered this gem of an opera company! We listened to an evening called the Musketeers of Venetian Baroque in a space with stunning frescoes. I needed to keep my coat on as the Carmini is stunning but cold. What an experience of beauty! $20 ticket price was more than fair.

Venice is a city linked to beautiful music. The ensemble has some very talented musicians and singers. Unfortunately, the soprano who leads the group doesn't so much murder the songs as bludgeon them to death and then violate the corpses afterwards. If you imagine listening to cats being strangled, you're not far off. Manage to book a concert without the blonde lead soprano (who promotes herself prominently on their advertising and social media) on the program and you're in for a treat.

Excellent performance by such talented artists. It was a joy to hear works of art not commonly performed. It is a must see/hear when you are in Venezia!

My friend and I went to see this and we both loved it! She is a pianist and frequents operas and symphonies, and I am completely out of my element with both, but we throughly enjoyed it. Lasted about an hour, really cool to hear these talented musicians play the authentic instruments, and the contralto singer was great too.

I'm generally lucky enough to come to Venice annually, and any visit to Venice is always improved with some glorious live music, transporting us back to the 18C when this city was on the cutting edge of Western music. The Venice Music Project has performed in a number of venues in the city over the years, but their semi-permanent base of Saint George's Church seems to very work well. The programs are on the short side (meaning easy to fit into a full day of activities and before dinner), chosen with care, and performed with energy. There is generally a good mix of instrumental and vocal music. In a recent concert I was particularly impressed by the violinist Giacomo Catana and the lutenist Ivano Zaneghi. Both were superb. Highly recommended!

Visitors to Venice who love Baroque music have a treat in store for them. Venice Music Project offers performances played on original instruments, allowing you to hear the sound their original audiences heard. Their musical standards are high, and it's a privilege to share the joy they transmit. Three or four musicians play on a variety of instruments, joined by a soprano with a gorgeous voice. All of them are very, very good at what they do. They perform on weekends at St. George’s Anglican Church, at Campo San Vio, near the Accademia Bridge. Like everything else about Venice Music Project, the acoustics there are excellent. They're on the Web.

I highly recommend a performance by Venice Music Project (VMP)! My friend purchased the tickets at home on the US online, then four of us went our first night in Venice. You get an authentic experience in a gorgeous setting, and feel transported to another time. These musicians deserve our support for the effort and expertise they have honed over many years. Your Venice experience should absolutely include this in your itinerary. Go see a concert with VMP and then have dinner nearby. What a night!

You will be hard-pressed to find something as unique and un-touristy as the Venice Music Project.
This came to me via my AirBnB rental but I ended up researching the project and finding more information about it online and booked through their website. I highly recommend doing so. There is a lot more information on their website and social media profiles than on AirBnB and the booking on their site offers more options.
Their programs change regularly, but the venue stays the same. This lovely little church a few steps from L’Accademia bridge & vaporetto stop is absolutely precious and comfortable. I don’t know if it actually still operates as a church, but I have a sneaking suspicion it does, and is for a very small, select clientele, because it’s about the size of an American SUV on the inside. Which is entirely the charm of it.
The night I attended, the program was a Bach-centered one, with a viola gamba, harpsichord and contralto vocalist. The artists were all women, and it was absolutely lovely. The sound of the harpsichord and viola drifting around the historic and cozy church was delicious. And the vocalist was incredible.
The program’s are a manageable length as well — about an hour. We asked for an encore because they were that fantastic, but we were still out by 20:30, which was perfect for an evening stroll through the sestieres.
Do yourself a favor and book this experience — whether you have a weekend or a week, it is worth it. Also book via their website — there are more offerings there. I booked a VIP ticket which was a bit more expensive, but came with early (and cushioned) seating as well as a glass of prosecco. This was a lovely experience for me, being a solo traveler, but may not be your cup of tea. Tickets were largely available at the door as well, but to guarantee a seat, definitely book ahead.
Also come early and treat yourself to a pre-show cocktail at the awesome bar around the corner or one of the restaurants nearby. Even Gino’s, which could be considered the more “touristy” of the spots, was absolutely delicious and very accommodating. (A simple tagliatelle bolognese was hot and fresh and the pasta perfectly al dente and typically very eggy. And the staff was sweet and tolerated my crappy Italian. But that’s another review for another time.)
Do it. You won’t be sorry.
