This small island is a bit off the usual Venetian path, but it’s worth seeing. Its Santa Maria Assunta church houses impressive mosaics, its bell tower offers great surrounding views—and it’s home to Locanda Cipriani, a well-regarded restaurant and hotel that played host to writing legend Ernest Hemingway .

Saw this island on a tour and found it to be most interesting. The old church is worth a visit for its interior.

This was part of a bigger tour that included Murano and Burano. There are several nice restaurants on the island along with an awesome pre-Renaissance cathedral.

Torcello is historically important -- the first place for settlement in the Venetian Islands. Excellent mruals in the church. But not much else. If you make all the connections -- Venice to Murano to Burano to Torcello and the long walk to the center --and back -- it is a very long half day. A big chunk of a several... More

We were told there are only 11 inhabitants on this small island, but it boasts two churches. It is somewhat off the beaten track and is a nice walk to the town square - 10 min.

This lovely, today largely peaceful island was one of the earliest centers of habitation in the Venetian lagoon. Today it is virtually uninhabited, but it contains two very important churches: the basilical Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, dating to the early 11th century with dazzling Byzantine mosaics of that century and the next, and the adjacent nearly circular church of... The church on Torcello is the oldest in the region. The boat ride from Venice takes an hour via Burano but it's well worth it.

It's a nice island, with nature intact. It was a bit disappointing though. Our Venice tour guide recommended because she said it was historic, but the island is extremely small. There are historical buildings but not much else.

Of all the little islands in the lagoon, my favorite is Torcello. Just delightful to wander about. We lucked upon a wedding which just added to the charm.

Unlike Murano and Burano there is very little to see and do in Torcello. If time is limited, don't go there as there are other more interesting places to see. Worth a visit though if you have time to spare.
