Neighbourhood: Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.

Very nice church not overrun with tourists. Nice respite from craziness. We walked in also because it was raining a little but glad we came in to see this wonderful church. After the 15th century the funeral services of all of Venice's doges were held here, and 25 doges are buried in the church. The huge brick building is Gothic style and very impressive. The vast interior contains many funerary monuments and paintings.

This monumental basiliaca is absolutely worth a visit, it is literally a gem! The huge brick building is built in the Italian Gothic style and from the 15th century it became the burial place of the Venetian doges. 25 of them are buried here. The interior is a wonderful art gallery where you can find works by such greats as Veronese or Giovanni Bellini. The entrance fee is €3.50.

Absolutely stunning. If I had to choose one church to visit in Venice, that would be it. Lots and lots of interesting details to see. Absolutely do not miss this burial place of the Doges. You can spend a lot of time wandering inside and finding marvelous things to see. Highly reccomend.

A basilica of medieval origins of undoubted historical and architectural interest.
But it is inside that you are struck by the tombs, tombs and other details that make it truly special.
The remains of many Doges are kept here and this makes it even more of a fantastic attraction in the city!

I have been coming with my family for Easter to see your Basilica for 10 years but I'm sorry to tell you that this year I saw that, first of all, the Church has become a market because a notice board has been placed in front of the basilica and therefore no you don't even see the tabernacle or the crucifix. I'm very sorry about this. I don't think the basilica was adequately prepared for the Easter decorations, only placing a few flowers. I'm very sorry.😪

This is located right next door to the Ospedale, the facade of which is really beautiful. There's a canal that runs right alongside so it doesn't get more scenic than this. It's about 5 minutes walk from the Rialto bridge and quite easy to find. I enjoyed walking round the church with its ornate statues. It was quiet too as there weren't many visitors. It's also served as a backdrop to some television shows but of course, it looks so much nicer in real life :)

This huge, austere church has the tombs of many Doges within. It dominates Castello and sits in a large square, next to the Ospedale. A truly impressive church, well worth a visit in its own right. The interior is vast and imposing. It's a place where you have the time and space to absorb the history and the peace to contemplate the glories of Venice.

3,50euros? Savez vous pourquoi est ce payant?
Je croyais que tous les monuments religieux étaient gratuits.

You have to pay if you want to visit it. I don´t agree with that. And it is not the only one. If you want to visit other churchs in Venezia you also have to pay, for example la Madonna dell´orto, Santa María dei Miracoli, Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, Santa María Assunta.
