I found this church facade rather delightful. The white outlines against the red brick is a feature that stands out, even among the churches of Venice. We did not manage to see the inside of the church, but as with every other church, I believe it would be worthwhile to go inside.

This is not the most beautiful church in Venice however, as the star of the show is the artwork of Jacopo Tintoretto, It is perhaps fitting that the church itself takes a back seat. In particular the two huge teleri either side of the chancel, Last Judgement & Adoration of the Golden Calf are stunning. €3 is a very modest... More

This 14th century church is a must-see for those who are into art. This was one battleground in the rivalry between Tiziano (Titian) and Tintoretto. Tintoretto's three master pieces are here: his Last Judgement, The Worship of the Golden Calf and The Presentation of Mary in the Temple. The are other Tintoretto's and Titians in the church as well. The... More

You can get here easily by vaporettos #5.1 or 5.2 It's in the quite sestier (district) of CannaRegio, (N.E. part). It's a relatively simple church where Tintoretto is buried (although it is still very large) and contains quite a number of his works. It is named after a statue that was moved here from a garden after becoming a pilgrimage... More

Well, we did not manage to get in, as there were other places as priority. But this was the first object, that we had to find, so we could find our hotel. Yes, I did look it up in map, but I got lost, accidentally. Worth seeing, maybe next time.

This is a lovely church. Huge Tintorettos and many other lovely art. Don't miss Madonna del Orto herself, and learn her story. It is really rather lovely. If you look at her closely you can imagine the sculptor throwing her away in a rage. She is completely out if proportion and all the more lovely for it.

Most come here for the - frankly rather dark and dull - Tintoretto painting. However I'd say forget that and head into the delightful hidden courtyard next door (right of the front door). This 'campo' was restored by the 'Venice In Peril' folks, and there is now the most delightful set of cloisters where you can sit (for free) in... More

Tintoretto's local church, and the site of his tomb, is right up at the northern edge of the islands. where Canareggio meets the lagoon. It is thirty minutes from San Marco and twenty from the Rialto: a 'must see' if you have come to appreciate Tintoretto and a church worth a walk. [TIP: make sure you have a decent map... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
