Neighbourhood: San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.

- Elina MichaelidouLondon, United Kingdom705 contributionsA quiet (and beautiful) place to visitA quiet place to visit in Venice without too many people. The theatre has beautiful interiors, and the audio guide explains its history very well. Our visit was less than an hour long, and it was a nice break as you don’t need to walk a lot around the theatre and most of the time you are listening to the audio guide seated.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 November 2023

- Hilary SCanterbury, United Kingdom118 contributionsWell worth the entrance price to learn about the history of La Fenice and see the opulent interior. The audio tour of Teatro La Fenice was well worth doing despite not being able to go in the auditorium (due to a technical rehearsal for upcoming Tales of Hoffmann and the ballroom (talk being given to Italian students). Actually being able to watch the technical rehearsal from the gilded splendour of the Royal Box was wonderful. I also enjoyed seeing the wooden model of the original theatre, the Maria Callas exhibition and having brunch in the restored room that houses the bar. We booked and paid for our tickets online, before we left UK, but there was no need as in November there are no queues. As we have never managed to be in Venice for any performances at La Fenice this tour was the next best thing and I'm glad to have seen the interior at last.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 December 2023
- Raj N382 contributionsWow! What an experience!Wow! What an experience - we visited on a rainy day in Venice. The queue was minimal, less than 10min to queue up. The audio guide is brilliant and everything is well sign posted with plenty of seating so you can take in the atmosphere and listen to the audio guide. There's a nice little cafe on the third floor where you can take a pitstop, overall I would factor in 90mins on your visitVisited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 March 2024

I would not recommend a tour of this theater, but if one loves music and can afford the relatively high price of the tickets, this venue can offer a very enjoyable night out. We bought one of the more reasonable tickets in a box above the orchestra for the opera. Thankfully, most of the performance and subtitles were visible from where we sat. The audience was dressed in a variety of ways, some very formal and others very casual. However, the theater glittered with beautiful lighting.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 May 2024

We opted to tour with the electronic guide, you need a credit card or driving licence as a "deposit" for the free handsets. The information is detailed and clear to understand so worth considering. The inside of the theatre is so beautiful and ornate it has to be seen to be believed. Well worth a couple of hours of your timeVisited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 4 June 2024

These were the second row in the box. The seat map showed six seats in the box, but there were only four. We did not have an obstructed view. Note that the second row seats are counter height bar stools that allow you to see over the two people on the rail. Tickets were 165 EUR ea. When choosing seats, the theatre is small, shaped like a horseshoe. Choose seats as close to the base of the horse shoe as possible. Any level, or main floor. Side boxes do have blocked views.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 8 June 2024

Take a tour or go to an opera if at all possible!
Just walking into the building, the years of history at the Teatro Le Fenice can be felt.
I am not an opera fan generally, but I bought tickets, online, for an opera while we were in Venice. It was an afternoon opera which tends to be more casual than and evening opera. The least expensive seats are some of the box seats.
It was awesome.
Visually it is beautiful, the opera was wonderful and it ended up being my favorite memory of Venice.

we attended a performance on January 1...New Years day and it was was inspiring and full of beauty and lovely music. From what we understood it had been damaged in the flooding in November and they sure did have it all fixed. THe music was well done and the second half was electrifying as they set off sparklers and confetti on the stage to the rousing response of audience and orchestra and singers

Biggest tourist trap ever. First time, I got there, but they decided to cancel visits, even if their website showed the theatre was open for self guided tours.
Second time, I called to make sure there is no " unexpected circumstance". Of course there was one...a renearsal limited the visit to the royal box. Nobody told me you cannot photograph anything (not even the ceiling or walls) during a rehearsal. Why charge people for maney, then? Therefore, a got a punch in the shoulder from an emp, oyee. I complained to the rmanager, she dismissed my observation with arrogance, saying she does ot belive me, since nobody else complained. Talking about organisatiinal culture, La Fenice has a despicable one.
Therefore, if you want to waste 11 euros, be punched then treated with arrogamce by highly incompetent staff, go to La Fenice!
Anyway, the decor is a contemporary replica of what burned down 20 years ago. Bad vibes...

We have tickets to the opera for September 2022. I am sharing seating and visibility information that might be helpful to others. Information was obtained directly from Venice Opera via email.
Seats are placed one behind another and are NOT staggered. Rows AF-AA seats are in the orchestra pit, hence they are situated below stage level.
Rows A - F at at stage level
Visibility from row G through N is very good. Row L is the best row in the orchestra section as there is a large gap between Rows I and L. Rows J and K are removed.
Balcony boxes are good seats as long as you get center boxes. Also, only the first row of balcony boxes has visibility to the stage. 2nd Rows are much cheaper due to visibility issues.
We could not find tickets for row L (not a surprise!) and got tickets for the first row in the 2nd balcony, center boxes.
IMHO, if you are going to Venice Opera one time, might as well, get the best seat possible. I've heard so much about the hall...can't wait for the performance. I will update my review with pictures from our seat for your reference later in October 2022.

We bought tickets ahead of time from their web sight. We saw la Boheme. It's a gorgeous opera house well worth a visit. I would recommend to buy the tíquets in Venice and not on line the tiquetes were cheaper at the tíquet office.

This was our second visit to the theatre and as previously, we had booked seats prior to leaving for Venice. The process on line was easy from the UK and the seating plan helped. This splendid theatre has a visually stunning auditorium. The Front of House staff were helpful showing us which floor and viewing box to go to. The production of the opera " Elixir of Love" was excellent. On our previous visit we had been so disappointed with the production of 'The Merry Widow". This production, however, was a joy to see and hear. The translations shown above the proscenium arch were not intrusive. We did not make use of the bar facilities so cannot make comment. On a previous occasion we had made enquiries about a tour of the theatre but understood it didn't include visiting backstage, scenery wardrobe etc. So we declined. It was much better to wallow in the ornate auditorium and entertainment.

Seeing a performance here should be on the must-do list of every opera lover. We bought tickets in advance from the official box office website. Someone tried to pick my purse as we were walking through crowded streets to the theater. Opera tickets gone! The box office was able to verify my purchase and issue new ones.
The rebuilt theater rose from the ashes of a fire, but still feels grand and historic. Good acoustics and a savvy audience that went nuts when the tenor hit all 8 high C’s in a famous aria, so he did it again. Like LaScala they have a house brand of sparkling wine which we enjoyed at the interval.
An afternoon of opera was the perfect refuge from the over touristed streets and smelly canals. Worth every penny to experience opera as it should be seen and heard in Italy’s second most famous opera house.

Very disappointing experience. If you have visited London theatres you will not be particularly impressed with this Venetian one.
Be aware that the 11 euro per person ticket price (sold to you by very offhand staff) grants access to the foyer (plus the ubiquitous gift shop), staircases, bar, a couple of music rooms and a box. You do not get to go onto the theatre floor. It took us about 10 minutes to see all we were allowed to visit. We made use of the toilets to get our moneys worth!

I’d love me to buy tickets for New Year’s Eve 2024 - how do I do this and when are the tickets released? Will we need to wear black tie?

Hi,
We're hoping to book to see Don Giovanni this year at Teatro La Fenice. We've tried to look online at sights like viewfrommyseat etc but the results are limited. I've also emailed the venue but no reply.
We'd like to understand what the view would be like from the seats and if we'd be able to see the English subtitles above the stage from these seats. Also it would be good to know if there are any obstructions as we've seen some reviews online that say the view is limited?
The three seating options that we are looking at are below
Stall A - Row N
3 Palchi - Box 8
2 Palchi - Box 8
Any help on the above and also recommendations for a nice place for evening meal prior to the opera would be appreciated.
TIA

I'll answer to the best of my ability but I'm no expert on the seats at La Fenice: I would personally opt for a stalls seat as there are no pillars to obstruct your view although you just don't know about the size of the people who'll be sitting in front of you. I understand that unless you have seats in the front row of a box it is difficult to see the stage. Basically, buy the best seats you can afford. I saw an opera at La Fenice's sister theatre, The Malibran, and could see the subtitles easily but as it was a German opera and the subtitles were in Italian I was none the wiser as I don't speak either language! Perhaps just read about the story before you go and sit back and enjoy the music, singing and the atmosphere. Regarding restaurants, I'm afraid we don't usually eat in that area of Venice as we're more familiar with the Cannaregio district and that is a bit too far away from La Fenice. However, I will ask my sister-in-law who stayed close to La Fenice last year and if she recommends a restaurant I will post the suggestion on tripadvisor.

I need help and advice about attending a concert in Teatro La Fenice:
I will have just one night in Venice and I will arrive around 19:30 (Marco Polo airport) in the evening and I am wondering it is possible for me to attend a concert that will start at 20:00 in the same evening? Will it be a problem coming late? How about the dress code since I won't be able to carry any fancy or formal clothes? Should I buy ticket in advance or try my luck in the theatre?
Thank you
Written 13 March 2023
You will need more than 30 minutes to get from the airport to Piazzale Roma in Venice, plus then you have to go by foot or boat to La Fenice. Most opera houses don't seat latecomers until an intermission or scene change, so you could miss at least half of it. Dress code is not an issue. Business casual is fine unless it's a premiere. I hope you have the flexibility to change your plans to allow more time.

Hi there, we are going to the opening night of La Traviata in September. We booked box seats. What is the appropriate attire? I read somewhere it will be black tie which sounds amazing!
Written 23 February 2023
Business casual was fine for the Rigoletto performance we attended in June. For a premiere the Milanese audience will dress up, so coat and tie for the men and a formal or cocktail dress for women.
