This is one of the most spectacular basilica in Venice off the beaten path but of Italian Gothic design. It is a treasure house with painting and sculpture by Tiziano, Bellini, Donatello and the burials of many Venetian Doges and a beautiful tomb of Canova and of Tiziano. It's incredible to see such wonderful design hiding in the San Polo... More

The Frari is a little off the traditional route around the sites of Venice. It is a spectacular church with a wonderful collection of paintings and monuments. The altarpiece is a masterpiece by Titian, it really must be seen. In a side chapel is a Bellini that is one of the most beautiful paintings I have seen. There are many... More

This was someplace that was recommended to us to not miss and boy was she right! What an incredible piece of history. There were paintings and artifacts here dating back to the 1400's. Just amazing. It is filled with works by the artists you studied in Art History class.

This is important architectural piece and historical place. You will not regret it if you love art and history. Also there is the Pasticceria Tonolo nearby so spoil yourself with macchiato and something sweet.

The artifacts and paintings in this church was well worth the visit. Our guide, Fiona Giusto, made the experience even better as she shared her knowledge. A truly amazing experience!

Monteverdi buried here - we heard the piccolo Cantate Veneziana singing in the evening after a lovely visit in the afternoon -such bliss!

We never went into San Marco - too many crowds - but happened upon this church and did not regret it. We didn't have enough time to do it justice, so will come back next time we're in Venice. If you want a great church with great art without the tour bus crowds, go here.

Beautiful art and sculpture in this enormous church - make sure you see the Titian. As others have said; not many people in it but I think that is because you have to pay and that is as it should be (there should be a fee for St Marks then maybe they could put some lights on!) The choir stalls... More

My brother is a professor of Art History and he gave us the heads up to not miss this church while we were in Venice. St. Marks is very crowded and tough to see the art. Santa Maria on the other hand had maybe 15-20 people in it and was absolutely gorgeous. Gigantic oil paintings by Titan and other Italian... More

This entire church is a work of art! The architecture is amazing, but the artwork contained therein is breathtaking! The paintings, the sculptures, the carvings, the tile floors, the carved wood choir stalls--everywhere you look there is another beautiful piece of art--and then you look UP and UP at "The Assumption"! For me, this is the reason I return to... More

Staying in San Polo

Neighbourhood Profile
San Polo
The Rialto Bridge is the most famous sight along the Grand Canal in San Polo, smallest of Venice's six sestieri (districts) and by far the busiest neighbourhood. Morning Venetians arrive to peruse the markets for fish, fruit and vegetables, while shops display goods from cheese to wine to desserts. San Silvestro and Rialto Market vaporetto (water taxi) stops add to the steady stream of foot traffic. San Polo is defined by churches including Basilica dei Frari, one of the most important churches sought by art lovers.
