Description:

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural...

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural decoration date from various periods. The interior, with works by artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, A.Vittoria and Tiepolo, includes vast council chambers, superbly decorated residential apartments, and austere prison cells. Along the facades of the Palace run loggias that overlook St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon. The combined entrance ticket to the St. Mark’s Square Museums grants access to the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico Nazionale and Monumental Rooms of Biblioteca Marciana.

When an attraction lists 'dungeons' and 'torture chamber', we know instantly that we're going to love it. We wanted to do the Secret Itineraries tour as that takes you to the torture chamber and the cell where Casanova was held. Yes, that Casanova. World's greatest lover. He was imprisoned for hitting on the magistrate's wife. Bad move, lover boy. Unfortunately,... More

Be sure to check your bag BEFORE you stand in the long line! The bag check ins mandatory! Stunning architecture and probably one of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen.

A visit gives a real insight into the historic workings and governance of this beautiful city. 19 euros for a visit but provides a ticket which can also be used for other museums within the city.

A beautiful palace dripping with history and beautiful paintings and frescoes. Worth taking your time visiting and pausing to take in all the artwork, i.e. best not done as part of a group tour as you miss so much. The armory was interesting too. At the time of visiting the Doges's apartments were closed, which was mildly disappointing. Also we... More

Go in off months, you'll miss the crowds and so much more time to really look. Dress well, nothing is heated, and have fun visualizing what it must have been like 500 years ago, we did!

Wonderful palace and a must do in Venice. The Secret Itineraries tour is a no brainer as its only an extra Euro in advance and gives you a guided tour of the secret areas of the palace as well as some detail on the history of Venice and Casanova!

We got tickets for the secret tour and it was the best money we spent in Venice. The guide was amazing, she gave us very detailed explanations and history she looked after the whole group and made us laugh with stories of life in the past. It is a long climb to the top but so well worth while making... More

Do not miss the staircases. Could not beleive the artistry and my eyes!!! The staircases had intricate details different from any other palaces I have ever seen. They lead one to believe that they will be going to the grandest place on earth.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
