Description:

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural...

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural decoration date from various periods. The interior, with works by artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, A.Vittoria and Tiepolo, includes vast council chambers, superbly decorated residential apartments, and austere prison cells. Along the facades of the Palace run loggias that overlook St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon. The combined entrance ticket to the St. Mark’s Square Museums grants access to the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico Nazionale and Monumental Rooms of Biblioteca Marciana.

Great art, great history, awesome tour. Don't miss it. While you are there, check out some of the other places in the square as well.

We took the Mysterious Palace tour, which purported to show lots of hidden stuff. Not so much. A couple of cells and the Bridge of Sighs , make up the dark stuff. The palace is pretty empty of furniture and mostly you look at portraits and classical paintings. It's definitely a unique place, but not every unique place is that... More

I have been to many places like this in Europe and to me it was nothing that I will remember especially since the apartments were closed. I didn't climb the stairs to view the square. You will have plenty of stairs like every place in Venice touring the palace.

Not to be missed. We spent 3.5 hours and could have spent all day. Well worth it! We were unable to book last minute tickets online so went right to the ticket window and were able to find last minute tickets there. Book in advance during the busy season.

If at St. Marks Square, take the time to check out Doge's Palace. There is extensive artwork and historical artifacts to view in many rooms.

Much better than the cathedral nearby. Tip: you can buy tickets nearby eg on the other end of the square at the tourist info and skip waiting in the line.

This palace has lot of paintings that are worth visiting. The armory has good collection of spears. The dungeons are bare and you can see the bridge of sighs as you go to the dungeons.

We booked the museum pass which also gave access to the Museo Correr (in the corner of St. Marks square. We visited both on the same day, and spent around 2 hours in each, although you could easily spend longer. A really beautiful building, and the prison is a must see, if only to cross the Bridge of Sighs.

We booked a tour online, and it was a great tour! We got a personal guide through the Palace and got great history and information. The palace is beautiful and has such a great story.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
