Description:

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural...

A masterpiece of Gothic architecture, the building and its sculptural decoration date from various periods. The interior, with works by artists such as Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto, A.Vittoria and Tiepolo, includes vast council chambers, superbly decorated residential apartments, and austere prison cells. Along the facades of the Palace run loggias that overlook St. Mark’s Square and the lagoon. The combined entrance ticket to the St. Mark’s Square Museums grants access to the Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Museo Archeologico Nazionale and Monumental Rooms of Biblioteca Marciana.

This was a great little palace in the middle of St Mark's Square. We got an audioguide for 5€ and spent the next hour and a half just wandering through amazing rooms of art and history, even a few dungeons! It was pricey but I think it was worth it.

We visited on a wet November Saturday, we had to que for about 45 mins but it was well worth it, an amazing Palace I still picture the awe on my wife's face looking at the ceilings in each room. Well worth the entrance fee, and we would visit again as we are sure we would be as amazed a... More

Very interesting visit but only because we took the Secret Itineraries tour. Our guide was really entertaining and made it very interesting. We got to see the cells that Casanova was held in (and escaped from) that you don't get to see on the normal visit. I think a normal visit could be a little boring as you get the... More

A lovely tunnel of arches to walk under just before St Mark's Square. A beautiful building to admire next to The Basilica and lovely at night.

This is a MUST DO!! Went on a Monday morning at the end of November and there were no lines. Gotta love traveling off season! Tip: the full price of a ticket is 19 euros but for only ONE euro more, we went on the Secret Itineraries tour. I am cheap and it is honestly the BEST 20 euros I... More

What an interesting Piazza. Even better when the tide comes in and it becomes flooded in places. The shops are plentiful, eating places inside and outside. Queues are long for St Marks but they put a boardwalk up so your feet don't get soaked if the water comes in. People sell shoe coverings to help you get through the water.... More

The queue was non existent on Friday morning so a super time to go! So glad that we did the secret Itineraries tour. Our guide Octavia's command of English was excellent as was her knowledge of the history as we made our way through the fascinating wells that housed prisoner's, Casonova's cell and other interesing areas included on the tour.... Came here with two teenage boys with the help of a tour guide (highly recommended). The palace is enormous; one should buy tickets in advance, otherwise the lines can be extremely long and tiresome. The place is filled with paintings by several of the major artists (Titiano, Vernoese and Tintoretto). A favorite with both adults and children is the famous... More

But lless so when so packed that even the birds are swooping in and out of the crownd and have near misses. That said the atmosphere is good. We went in Spetember but even October would be good.

This is one of the best ways to see the Doge's Palace as you buy the ticket, have a tour that shows you the secret parts and then you are free to visit the rest of the place.

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
