Was very helpful to get in with a skip the line tour. Guides narrative helped make far more enjoyable in providing narrative and explanations that would not have been obtained otherwise. The marble as well as the 24K gold inlays were quite impressive.

I am Episcopalian but this out did any of the little churches back home. Gloriously nice place with incredible architecture. It's a must see unless you are Bill Nye the "science guy" who likely doesn't believe in this religious stuff. Personally I found it very moving. See it now before the "oceans rise" and only the top is visible.

This is a fabulous basilica in a romantic setting. The mosaics are of the highest order and to visit it on St Marks feast day was extra special. Brilliant

We went with the walking tour from City Wonders which skipped the line, which was very long - so very worth it. The Cathedral is beautiful. They don't allow pictures, but some people took them anyway. Looking out from the surrounding balcony is great.

We booked a small private tour that avoids the long lines. Both the interior and exterior are fantastic. Great mosaics and beautiful church. We climbed to the top and out on the balcony-great view of Venice. The original bronze horses are displayed on the inside-magnificent details for such old works. The only downside are the crowds on the inside, although... More

The Basilica was the first stop on our tour. I had paid for an advanced ticked before we left which enabled my wife and I to skip the extremely long queue. The Basilica was spectacular in every sense and visiting the upper floors with a balcony/roof that has great views over St Mark's Square. Well worth a visit.

We arrived here after our tour of the Doge palace next door. No photos are allowed as it's a church but it is definitely worth visiting. They only switch the lights on for 1 hour everyday so try and get there between 12 & 1pm to see it in its glory otherwise some of the frescoes will blend into the... More

The Basilica is, of course, stunning (and a bit gaudy). Pay the extra fees to see everything inside and go to the highest level. But you must must must get a ticket in advance (ours had a particular time to queue up). And you have to make sure you are in the right line. It is mobbed, but yet cannot... More

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
