The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

If you want to see/visit a still-functioning gondola workshop, there is one facing the Rio de S. Trovaso, right next to the beautiful San Trovasa church. Don`t miss it if you are in the area!

This waterway runs from the Grand Canal to the Giudecca Canal. Close to the Giudecca Canal is a gondola manufacturing and repair shop. 3 bridges, Marvegie, Trovaso and Longo, cross the canal. This Rio is a nice destination on your visit to Venice.

Turning left off the Zattere (which is at the side of the Guidecca Canale) you walk at the side of this pretty and interesting narrow canal.
At one end is the guidecca canal and at the far end it leads into the grande canale.

The first fascinating thing you see is the san trovasa boatyard, here since the 16century it is where gondola are lovingly restored, at the side is a rather unusual swiss like chalet. This is followed by the San Trovasa church, this is following by lovely palazzo's which are part of the university of venice.

There is even a san trovasa restaurant - worth a visit to this fascinating part of the city
