About
Renovated by the Japanese architect Tadao Ando, Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana are the two museums of the Pinault Collection in Venice. Until 6th January 2020, Palazzo Grassi presents the exhibition 'La Pelle', a solo exhibition dedicated to Luc Tuymans that includes over 80 paintings by the artist from 1986 to today. Until 15th December 2019, Punta della Dogana presents 'Luogo e Segni', a group exhibition of contemporary art that brings together 36 artists whose works establish a particular relationship with their urban, social, political, historical, intellectual setting. The Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi offers a wide range of events: conferences, concerts, screenings, workshops... that underline the will to establish a dialogue with a Venetian and international public.

Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

Bruce Nauman: WTF was that? Literally the most egotistical BS excuse for art I have ever seen. Literally considering declining the credit card transaction this was so bad. What a joke. DO NOT GO to this. I cannot believe this show was ever allowed to be displayed - it’s a joke.

Well the building is beautiful. The views are gorgeous. But the exhibit? A total pretentious waste of time. As others have noted below, we thought we’d see some o Pinault’s private collection and then the current exhibit “Icones”.
Well… no. Less than 20 rooms, each with a handful of unintelligible nonsense in them. A series of 20 or so lit skulls. A crumpled suitcase in a corner. A series of what I think were candles stuck together. I could go on, but it was painful enough walking through it, let alone reliving it.
Adding insult to injury, I understand the guy’s a multi billionaire with a huge private art collection. Salma Hayek if you’re reading this tell your husband I want my money back.

The Bruce Nauman exhibition is a shame.
Bruce Nauman?
Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2009 for Best National Participation???
Total nonsense ..
How can this be called art?
How can such rubbish find its place in such a place ?
What a waste .. time, money, space..
Pinault is sinking with Venice with this ..😳
… how to fill a place with emptiness ?

This was the only place we felt fleeced in Venice. The space itself was lovely; wide open and elevated with soaring views over the lagoon, but the 15€ each we paid for the exhibition was a total rip off. The art was atrocious. Postmodern crap inspired by war, commercialism and insanity; no explanations other than the cut-paste free booklet.
We couldn't wait to get out of there. Hopefully by the time you go the exhibition will be something more culturally fulfilling, unless you like amateurish modern 'art', that is.
Oh, and six euros for two jackets in the changing room added insult to injury. I shan't go back!!!

Bruce Nauman: WORST EXHIBITION EVER. Do not waste your money as it is an intellectual egotism with no intent whatsoever.

My wife and I visited this new museum on May 28, 2010. The large, imposing, fortress-like 2-story building occupies the entire pie-shaped point at the southern entrance to the Grand Canal. The structure itself was worth seeing for its architectural drama both inside and outside. No expense was spared remodeling an old commercial warehouse to create numerous different, visually stunning exhibit spaces for individual living artists. The result is world class.
Rent the audio tour to fully appreciate the work you see. Well worth it.
The modern art is fascinating, provocative, wide-ranging, and will challenge you. We could have spent hours just on the exhibit of "Nazis in hell": literally thousands of tiny, detailed figures in nine (?) large, clear, plastic enclosures depicting horrific scenes of eternal damnation.

My guide book informed us that this museum houses Pinault’s extensive modern art collection and that this is one of the top modern art musea in Europe.
Well we were cheated out of 15€/ person. There ws no art collection but an exhibition of Bruce Nauman. I love modern art. Please can someone explain to me what this was? Modern art for arts sake. It was an assault on the senses and an insult to any art lover. We spent 15 mins there and left. Awful. Exhibition at Grassi not much better.

The building is very nice and the views are beautiful, but that is not the reason to visit a museum and spend € 15 per person! The art on display is very disapponting and why is it art anyway?

The Punta della Dogana in Venice was built in the late 17th century as a Customs House.
Having been empty for years, the art collector Francois Pinault signed a lease with the city and commissioned the architect Tadao Ando to restore the exterior and boldly reschape the interiors as a gallery for a changing series of exhibitions of contemporary art. Two years ago, Damien Hirst took over the entire building. This year is an exhibition 'Luogo e Segni' linked to memory of places.
Compared to the Damien Hirst exhibition, the current is a little tame, with a few fireworks including Wu Tsang up in the Belvedere and Sturtevant's light installation, while there are a few works which do make you question what some artists get away with...

Want to see a collection of art in a gallery owned by French billionaire Francois Pinault? Then drop by this unusual space, the former Customs House for Venice. It’s a varied collection in a very cool space, but they should consider lowering the entry fee from €18. That’s higher than almost anyplace else in Venice. And Pinault doesn’t need the cash.
