The area
Neighbourhood: Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.

    easy transfer to airport
Used this bus stop to take a bus to Marco Polo airport. Buying tickets was painless but the wait was out in the open where the sun was searing hot. Quick and efficient transfer to the airport. Be prepared to haul your luggage across bridges as you did all through venice.

    From here: pedestrians only
Piazzale Roma is situated just beyond the Ponte della Libertà, which connects Venice with mainland Mestre. This is the ultimate place in Venice where you can drive your car, ride bus, tram, bicycle, or motorbike. Get off the bus or tram or put your motor vehicle in a parking garage (visitors who don't want to queue at the Piazzale Roma parking garages have already left the car at Tronchetto and have taken the People Mover to Piazzale Roma). From here the assignment of the visitor of Venice is walking, walking, walking. In the direction of Rialto and San Marco or in the direction of Accademia Bridge. At first sight Piazzale Roma is nothing to write home about, with the busses, trams, cars queueing at the parking garages and the flocks of tourists, but it is the glorious starting point of a visit to fairy tale Venice, so a four point rating

Not particularly pretty, but an important location because this is where you will find the train station and the People Mover. It's a good place to start your exploration of the city or to catch a vaporetto. The Grand Canal is here and lots of buses and car parking.

The Place to Come and Go in and around Venice
A great place to arrive and depart Venice. There are trams, buses, taxis and a host of water travel options. A couple of blocks away is the People Mover to the cruise terminals, ask for directions, it is not easy to spot. The porters will help with transporting luggage across the bridge to the train station. They will offer a per luggage price, but you can negotiate if you feel it is too high.

This is a massive and chaotically busy bus station with heavy bus and taxi traffic. Volume must be over 200 buses per day. Lanes are labelled but looking for where you want to catch your next bus is somewhat bewildering.

On our trip, we needed to transfer to/from a vaporetto (water bus). On arrival, we managed to secure a luggage porter; however, on departure (on a tight schedule to catch a flight), there were no porters to be found. This was around 0710h.

A nice aspect to all this is that vaporetto passes were also valid on the airport bus. Often is was not necessary to present your pass (vaporettos and buses).

This is right next to water taxi station and this is where the bus from the airport drops you off. So going anywhere from here - you would end up seeing this. It is a beautiful place - but true about other paces in Venice. Spending 15 min in this bridge and taking photographs is all you need here.

Most of the people leave their car at Piazzale Roma. Too expensive. You better leave your car just outside Venice. You will pay only 5.5 Euro a day (plus the ticket for the bus. It's only one stop from Piazzale Roma). We have chosen venicecitypark, but there are many others.

You will at some point come here if you are staying in the historic part of Venice.  Most of the airport buses stop here.  You can then get public transport (water bus) to the historical areas of Venice.  There is a place where you can get a taxi too.  Having said this, on the night I was there I had to wait twenty minutes.  Very few but thankfully the line was not long.  Other than that, not much going on.  Dirty with a few stalls where you can get snacks.  Busy and lively.

I had only 8 hours in Venice before my flight. The airport has a wonderful left luggage area. It was so easy to check in our luggage then take the boat into Venice. Decided to go to the lido . Had lunch and spent afternoon there. I have been to Venice many times before so just wanted to spend a pleasant few hours.
We were dreading having to sit at airport with luggage. Lovely and very easy airport

Everyone please be careful. There are groups of men who work in 3 or 4 person little groups who pretend to help you with your ticket onto the vaporetto (boat down the grande canal) and
They will push you and not let you move and when you are confused and disoriented one of them will steal your entire wallet !!! Shameful. Mine was zipped inside a small purse which was inside a larger purse and they opened it and helped themselves while
Crushing me and not letting me get to where my husband
Was standing. Just awful.
