The area
Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

From the San Basilica boat station, you can walk, past Zattere, all the way to the entrance of the Grand Canal, and gaze across to the Doge's Palace and Palladio's masterpiece. On a lovely late afternoon in sunny September, we walked back again as well!
From the southern side of Dorsoduro, you get stunning views across the Canal to the former industrial island of Guidecca: this is now being converted into an interestingly mixed area with older housing and luxury boutique hotels - Elton John has a place there!
As well as the beautiful views across the canal, there is a huge variety of ship traffic. On our hour there, we saw a three-masted sailing ship set sail, the cruise ship 'Rhapsody of the Seas' loom by )on a day of protests about the damage done by cruise ships) and the yacht 'Grace E' (yours to rent, with crew of 20, for 600,000 euros a week).
You pass La Calcina, where Ruskin wrote much of 'Stones of Venice' and you can have a drink or snacks on the terrace to linger over the view, There are reasonable takeaways or ice creams at Zattere that you can take on the walk with you.
At the end of the promenade, the views of the Doge's Palace and Palladio's San Giorgio Maggiore are brilliant! Recommended as a a completely different experience from the brilliantly narrow city walks!

Beautiful during the day, with all the sin that shines over the sea, and the seagulls laugh about the people... And Le Zattere is lovely at night. So romantic! My favourite place in town.

This is long waterfront promenade that is great for the evening stroll (passagiata). It is located in the sestiere Dorsoduro. It is a very peaceful place far away from the crowds of the center city. The island of Giudecca is just across from the Zattere. There are many notable buildings including several churches, government buildings, restaurants, souvenirs shops etc. along the promenade.

The Zatterre runs from Punta Della Dogana to the San Basilio station along the south shore of Sestiere Dorsoduro. Just over 1 kilometer in length, gives great views of Giudecca and the Giudecca Canal. As this is on the south side of Venice there is very little shade and in the afternoon can become very hot. Bring water. The views from here are amazing. Located along this walkway are churches, apartments, restaurants, bars, 3 vaparetto stops and the Port Captains office. From Ponte Longo there is also a view of the gondola boatyard.

The Zattere are a long stretch of walking bank in front of the large expanse of water called the Giudecca canal. It is a chic part of town which goes from Venice harbour to the custom house opposite Saint Marks square. It is a fantastic walk: there are good looking palazzi, elegant churches and lots of bars and restaurant. ideal for a relaxing stop and an aperitif. Wonderful at sun set!

The Zattere is a series of wide pavements in Dorsodoro, with views across the Giudecca Canal to La Giudecca. Only a short stroll from the hustle and bustle of the Ponte dell'Accadedemia, this area is much quieter and has a much more laid back feel to it. It's a real sun trap, but the heat doesn't feel as oppressive as St Mark's can. There are still plenty of cafes and restaurants, and even a supermarket to stock up with water or a picnic.
A lovely area to escape the crowds for a stroll.

The sunlit attractions of the Dor Soduro's Zattere are apparent even from a removed vantage viewing spot across from the wide Giudecca Canal. The bridge that links both Zattere Al Ponte Longo to Zattere Ai Gesuati, allows the Rio di San Trovaso to link with the Grand Canal.
The two matching facades of the church are visible as well as its bell tower, which has a profound list due to the uncertainty of its foundations, sunk in the mud floor of the lagoon. Makes you stop and think about the remarkable engineering involved in this watery city

Zattere is a wide pavement set out with many cafes, overlooking the channel towards Giudecca. We have been to this area and Dorsoduro area many times, and it is one of our favourite parts of venice. There are many little squares with cafes, and it is quiet and peaceful. Our main reason for visiting this area this time was to go to the Church of Angelo Raffaele. We have tried several times to go there, and always found it closed. this time it was open . There is a series of painting by GianAntonio Guardi, of Tobias and the Angel. This church was mentioned in the novel Miss Garnet's Angel, and also we have a grandson called Raphael, so we went for him. Our guide book gave it a poor review. But it was a lovely church, with an old pulpit dated around 1687, a copy of a 14c one, with interesting statues. There ae other depictions of Tobias and the Angel, in a side chapel , in other paintings, and on a wooden plinth, dated 1826. The story of Tobias and the Angel is explained in a leaflet , in English. It is a story from the Apocrypha, not part of the Bible we are used to. So, although this was our main reason for being in this area, there are also yards where gondolas are made and restored, and a boathouse you an see right into from Zattere. Also the gates outside the church of Spirito Santo, where a bridge of boats is built across the channel 3rd Sunday in July, to Il Redentore on the opposite side of the channel in Giudecca. We walked the length of Zattere right round to the church of Salute, where we sat for a few minutes listening to organ music before catching a vaporetto

Often in the Piazze or in the little streets of Venice it might be hard to find some sun. Not on the Zattere. All day, every day the sun shines. Perfect for wandering down, sampling caffè, gelato, lunch or an aperitvo before dinner, per fare una passeggiata. As you sit out, or wander in the sun, its a feast for the eye, either people watching (especially on a sunday afternoon when all of the Dorsoduro seems to feel in the mood for a gander) or gazing out over the Canale della Giudecca. One little bar, entirely outside even has live music of a weekend afternoon - sun, spritz good company and tunes...what more do you need to get the party started? But you can also watch the sun go down behind the Giudecca so tranquility is also very achievable.
