The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, ā€œterra firmaā€ to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.

At the time I was there a temporary art exhibit and murano glass exhibit were on. It finishes end of May 2018 I think.
Entry was free and both exhibits were great but I also really appreciated being able to walk around (ground floor and first floor) the building. It is beautiful. It doesn't take long to pop your head in and have a look around.
Also it is quiet and in a quieter part of the city. I really enjoyed wondering around this area.

We arrived to find that this is an audiovisual exhibition of Giotto. There are no actual artworks by Giotto here, just hi-res reproductions and screens showing highlights of his work. We felt that the entry fee of E18, one of the highest in Venice, did not make it worth visiting, so we didn't actually go in. One can see real works by Giotto nearby, so it seems a shame to waste money on this. A cheap train trip to Padua and a visit to the Scrovegni Chapel (walking distance from the station) gives you an abundance of the best of Giotto's work, or for more general art, the Academia in Venice is superb. It is nice that the Scuola has been reopened after many years of dereliction, and it would be lovely to see it house a proper collection of Northern Italian Art at some point.

The exhibition was definitelly AMAZING! The building, the spaces, Canova's self-portrait installation were breathtaking. I would love to take a cup of coffee in this wonderful atmosphere as I did last year when I visited Magister Giotto.
If anybody has the opportunity to spend some time in Venice, don't miss it!

The beautiful ancient building still show the use of the basketball team, the conservative renovation is perfect. Now there is an exhibition about Canova, everything is projected in concomitance to the audio. Really recommended, for me an innovative way to approach to art.

Highly professional multimedia presentation. You progress through 7 rooms at a pace determined by the programme (~45mins total); commentary (through headphones) progresses as you move from room to room. Comprehensive overview of Giotto's life and work, but no real artworks by Giotto. Worth a rating of 5 for the presentation and content, but expensive, hence a rating of 4.
