Neighbourhood: Dorsoduro / Accademia
Artsy is the defining mood of this neighbourhood with street artists, students, painters, sculptors, restorers, curators, historians, collectors, heirs and heiresses rubbing elbows. Peggy Guggenheim's collection, now a museum, lures chic locals for evening art aperitifs. Traditionalists and visionaries cocoon in bohemian luxury. La Salute basilica buttresses the neighbourhood to the east. Gondolas bob in the morning light. The Accademia Bridge crosses the Grand Canal. A back street doubles as basketball court. Palaces house residents, or like Ca' Foscari a university, or a museum like Ca’ Rezzonico that attracts Venetians for concerts. Dorsoduro reveals its industrial roots too, in buildings converted to house university departments or exhibitions. Campo Santa Margherita bursts with youthful energy from local students. Foot traffic bustles to and from Piazzale Roma and Santa Lucia train station. Evening commuters pause for an aperitivo. Neighbours exchange confidants in a campo (square) on their way to market.

The once beautiful palazzo is slowly being brought back to life. We pass it most day either on foot or on the waterbus as it is just a few doors away from our hotel next door to the San Salute Church.

For several years the outside has been covered up, the only thing you could see was the amazing huge chimneys, but on this visit everything has now disappeared, and you can see the fabulous palazzo - it is so beautiful.

Probably most visitors to the city will not be aware of its very chequered past, with whoever has owned it coming to a tragic end - bankruptcy, accidents or even death.
The Woolworth heiress Barbara Wootton bought the palazzo for her new husband Carry Grant - a couple of years later they divorced.

To see the rear of the Palazzo close up, walk along Calle Bastion to the little square Campo Barbaro and stand on the bridge which crosses the Rio Pietro, you will get a great view.

Although a reputation of being haunted, it has recently been bought by another American rich lady, who is slowly having this fabulous very special palazzo restored.

We have been admiring this beautiful Palazzo at the southern end of the Grande Canale for years, in December 15 we noticed it has scaffolding and covers round the front of it. This visit in February 2016 it is still covered up, and as we walked round the back in Campiela Barbaro you could see the true effect of the restoration.

Lets hope this once beautiful Palazzo will shortly be brought back to life

This “cursed” palazzo, fronting the Grand Canal is distinguished by the 3 rose windows on the façade and the inscription “VRBIS GENIO IOANNES DARIVS” (Giovanni Dario, in honor of the city genius). The rear of the building can be seen from Campiello Barbaro. There have been many unusual deaths reported of owners, but over 500 years is it a curse or coincidence. We did not enter just observed from the Grand Canal and Campiello Barbaro.

Beautiful Palazzo is being renovated back to its glory. Rich infamous history which includes previous owners being involved in accidents, a bankruptcy, a death an even the rumor of being haunted. It seems to have a new owner from the US to bring the building back to it's original splendor.

This now beautifully restored Palazzo is minutes from our hotel
We pass it at least one or twice each day, and I always stop and gaze, I would just love to be able to go inside and wander around.

My previous reviews have described its amazing history, death, bearevement, and bankcruptcy, the owners seem to die in strange cirucmstances. Whenever we wander by day or late at night there never seems to be anyone there at the end of February each year.

The rear of the palazzo with is high walled garden overlooks the pretty small campo barbaro, and at the side runs a narrow canal called Rio Toresselle.
Mysterious from the back, but totally beautiful from the Grande Canale.
