Construction of the "Torre dell'Orologio" (Clock Tower) began in 1426 and finished around 1430. Later it was enlarged to accommodate the new clock that was completed in 1434.
The clock tower was inaugurated in 1437, and the great triumphal archwas added in 1531.

The astronomical clock has references to the zodiac. However, the Libra sign is not present, as with the pre-Roman system Scorpio and Libra were one Zodiac sign.

One of the symbols of the city, stands mightily on Piazza dei Signori. On the occasion of the Cicap festival and thanks to the volunteer ladies of Salvalarte of Legambiente, we had the opportunity to visit the clock tower. The mechanism is explained but many things are pointed out and also many curiosities (for example because the scale sign is missing...). It is accessed via flights of stairs but there is also an elevator, instead the top floor where the actual mechanism resides can only be reached via a wooden staircase.

The astronomical clocktower dates from a time (1434) during which most people still believed the earth was flat. Even two centuries later the Roman catholique inquisition condemned Galileo for opposing this view. The Padua clock shows the earth as a circle in the middle around which the planets and the sun are placed.

Heliocentrism (sun as the centre of the universe) as first described by Copernicus emerged as a theory roughly one hundred years later. Anyway the Padua clocktower is testament of the progressive development of science and its ascendancy over superstition and religion.

A wonderful building, well maintained and in very good shape.

If you see it the first time, for example from the Piazza della Frutta, it is just breathtaking.

Don't miss this superb building if you are visiting Padua.

365 day clock with the time being told by the 4 corner movement. I would say larger than the one in Venice and more orrnate beautiful site.

Amazing sight at a market square, built in 1430, it stands till this day. At the base of the tower, the great triumphal arch was added a hundred years later in 1531.

The clock is a highlight of Padova and sits at the end of a bustling square that always seems lively. You can't visit the building itself, just admire the clock from the square and then shop, eat or people watch. Well worth stopping to see.

Located at the bottom of the Piazza del Signori, in front you'll notive a tower with astronomical clock. It was made in Italy in mid 1400... it ndicates hours, months, moon phases and the course of the sun through the signs of the zodiac ... fascinating! It deserves at least a look of admiration.

The astronomical clock overlooks the Piazza del Signori, my favourite of the 3 piazzas in close connection in the historical old Padua. Lots of small restaurants and cafes with seating on the piazza, lots of socializing and relaxing. The clock itself is beautiful.

Padova has 3 big squares in its old town, and this is by far the most beautiful one.
Dominating the square is the clock tower, built in Venetian style and almost the same as one on Venice's St. Mark sq. Great photo op and beautiful edifice.
