We visited teh square at various times of teh day, when visiting buikldings, looking for lunch, sipping coctails in teh evening. It is always buzzing, interesting and wonderful to contemplate. The buildings are fantastic especially the clock tower. The different times of days gives a different perspective and is worth doing

The square is a normal one, perhaps above average considering the history but in my opinion " Prato della valle" is better. The thing that makes this place one of the most beautiful location I have ever seen is the, functioning, astronomic clock tower that watches over the square. The tower is a perfect reconstruction of the original that perished under the fire. The investigative eye will find that among the signs of the Zodiac the sign of Libra is missing. This is due to the fact that the astronomy of the clock is based on the pre-Roman zodiac system where the constellations of Scorpio and Libra were merged into one.

A wonderful shopping experience whether for fruit, flowers, leather goods or clothes and the chance to sit and enjoy street life at one of the many excellent coffee shops surrounding the piazza. Stall holders so friendly and a delight to deal with.

Looking for a great place to do side-walk dining and beverages, Piazza dei Signori is it. We arrived early (7:30) just as some of the restaurants were finishing their prep for the evening meals. By 9:00 there were many people waiting to find a seat. We enjoyed Cafe Kaffler, but I don't find a listing for it here. I would go back to this place.

I did not expect too much from Padova/Padua as it was just a mid point between Venice and Bologna for us. After "checking" "il Santo" church and Prato della Valle (skipping consciently Scrovegni chapel which many sites list as the number 1 attraction) I thought "this was the most important part of it" and started walking in the university neighborhood as I knew there were some more things to see there ... wow, all the neighborhood is lovely for walking (lots of students/young people/most streets without cars, just bikes), but Piazza dei Signori, while sun sets, was just lovely. On one side there is a church, on the other an interesting and functional astronomic clock, on another Loggia Gran Guardia and some lovely houses and between all these there were lots of terraces/tables where people were eating/drinking/chatting. If you don't stay at a table, at least just get a gelato (close by Grom will be just fine) and admire the Piazza from the stairs of the Loggia or fountain. Visit the Piazza late, after 8-9 PM and stay at least half an hour to check the atmosphere (it seems it is more lively in certain days of the week, I visited it in a Wednesday at different hours, but people also recommend Friday and Saturday). Also, as Padova is (a lot) less touristic than Venice/Rome/Florence/etc, the atmosphere has a more "italian" feeling than on the better known italian cities. Piazza Signoria/Repubblica/Duomo from Florence or San Marco in Venice or Navona/Spagna/Trevi/San Pietro/Campidoglio in Rome are all great and probably have more interesting architecture, but this one has a more authentic atmosphere. Unfortunately, the huge crowds of tourists spoil many other popular places in Italy.

The best time to visit the P. dei Signori is as dusk falls. The square's tables and chairs become filled with young (and more mature) Padovani talking, laughing and enjoying their spritzes, musicians busk and street vendors ply their wares, the ice-cream shops do a roaring trade and taxis and scooters wend their way through the groups of merry-makers. It is THE place to while away an hour or two before or after eating (at, we would recommend, the Rosso Pomodoro). We like the free crisps that accompany the reasonably priced drinks, the lack of pressure on spending more than the cost of one drink and the (apparent) lack of concern over how long you sit with your one drink, even if it is just a bottle of water. Incidentally' a Spritz (made with Aperol) is the typical aperitivo of Padua and, having a somewhat sharp tang, is an (readily in my case) acquired taste! We found the little ice-cream shop two doors away from the Grom outlet to serve bigger, better and cheaper than its illustrious neighbour. If you want to sample the true Italian life, then this is the place to go in Padua!

It's a nice place to hang out with friends and have a drink. It isn't very clean but the stores around are cool.

This is certainly the most beautiful sq in central Padova out of 3 similar in size. The Torre d'Orrologio, or the Clock tower dominates the square in its Venetian style beauty and pretty much similar to the original one.
During the day heat, the square was pretty much deserted, while at night the entire area was packed with people as all the restaurants around have their outdoor seating right in the middle of the sq.

During the day there are markets here but in the evening, the piazza comes alive. It is a great place for a spritz or meal and people watching. Beautiful clock tower and surrounding buildings. Enjoy!

Piazza dei Signori è così chiamata perché secondo la tradizione deriva dai "signori" di Carrara che assunsero il comando della signoria della città di Padova dal 1318 al 1405.
