This huge, impressive Roman arch has let travellers know they are approaching Aosta Old Town since 25 BC!

this landmark has historical significance as well as being pleasant to look at whilst eating - but it can also be a useful feature to navigate with when moving around the outer part of old town as it has parking nearby and is a good starting point.

An amazing arch dating back to 25BC in the wonderful city of Aosta where there are so many archaeological treasures to see.
Incredible to think that until recently traffic still passed underneath the arch.

The Arch is located on what would have been the main road leading into the centre of Aosta between the bridge across the nearby River Buthier and the imposing Porta Praetoria marking the entrance to the city.

The Arch, which is built from conglomerate rock, was erected in celebration of the Roman victory over the Salassi in BC25.

The Arch has one vault which stands just over 11 metres high to the keystone and is over eight metres wide. The Arch is adorned with 10 engaged columns topped with Corinthian capitals whilst the entablature is more Doric in style.

In the early 18th century the attic was replaced with a slate roof whilst the whole structure received a makeover in the early part of the 20th century.

The wooden crucifix which sits below the vault is a copy of one which was placed there in 1449.

There is a brass statue of Augustus nearby.

Unfortunately you cannot get close to the Arch as it is surrounded by gardens and a small chain fence. It is also ringed by a road.

Neat arch that is a must see when visiting. The signage nearby explains the history of changes made to the arch throughout the centuries. There are public restrooms nearby by the parking lot. It is difficult to see up close.

Aosta landmark, a must see if you're visiting. It's very well preserved and interestingly it has been "recycled" in christian times by placing a cross underneath! Research the history beforehand because unfortunately the plaque in front of it doesn't tell much about it.

This iconic landmark in Aosta was very near where we were staying by the Romano Bridge. Look out for the dinosaur!

A good Roman triumphal arch, situated on a roundabout! Nearby Roman footbridge and city gate (as well as the theatre, cellars and forum) make Aosta a good place to stop for anyone interested in Roman times.

This is about 2000 years old, yes. Walk thru it, feel the time passed. It's in amazingly good condition.
