Beautiful frescoes

Within an otherwise boring church, the Chapel of St. John has a group of beautiful frescoes dating back to the 13th century. Well worth a short visit.

A short work from the Duomo, this church is very nice, but you must visit St. John's Capel to see the fascinating paintings, especially the one about death with the horse in the middle separating the young people from the old people, and the picture of St. Peter weighing the souls for final judgement.

The Dominican church complex is only a short walk from the central Walther Square in the city, probably most easily reached by a short stroll on an almost direct line from the Cathedral (which is at one edge of Walther Square). From the outside the church is more than usually plain (apologies to Oscar Wilde), and as my title notes,... More

A really nice church with an even more beautiful Chapel inside. The main nave is unadorned due to bombing during WWII, however the Rococo choir is still nice to see. However the best part is the Chapel of St John with its amazing, Giottoesque, frescoes depicting stories from the bible. Beautiful the one depicting the Triumph of Death.

There is a breathtaking simplicity of design and elegance in this church just off the square in the center of Bolzano. The church makes itself known on the hour with its bells, but when you enter you find a place of harmony and peace. Can't imagine a better place to give thanks for what we have.

During a too brief visit to the wonderful town of Bolzano we located St John's chapel off a small street a few minutes walk from the market. A German gentleman called Alfred who spoke good English gave us a guided tour of the frescoes in the church and an explanation about how each one related to the bible and the... More

The frescoes in this church will not astonish you the way the ones in the Branacci Chapel in Florence or the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua will, but they are worth stopping in to see. The church is right near the Duomo and the main piazza, so it doesn't take long to find and explore.

Close to the main Bolzano Duomo. Worth a visit and to see the Chapel of St. John. This is going through a major restoration but it is worth seeing this space which was frescoed during the 14th century. Free but for 0.5 euro you can light the dim interior. I walked into the Chiesa dei Domenicani (across from the Duomo and much more impressive!) and at first thought, why bother to look around; its so dull looking, but my friend insisted and we went back behind the alter and found two sets of frescoes which must be the most important frescoes in the city. Here inside the Capella San... More

The Chiesa Dei Domenicani in Bozen (Dominikanerkirche) is one of the most important churches in South Tyrol. Its art historical perspective is gained by a small chapel which contains important frescoes of a follower of Giotto. A direct influence from the Arena chapel in Padova can be seen in these paintings.
