Stuck at Malpensa Airport for 30 hrs I hired a rental car got a local map and headed for the nearby Lake Orta driving mostly the non motorway as I was interested in the local scenery which on a hot summer day was fabulous. On arrival in the town the small island and church set in the lake seemed almost close... Lake Orta is spectacular. It is surprisingly quiet, unspoiled and uncommercialised; we were there in the height of the summer and there were very few people around compared to the more commercialised lakes such as Garda and Como. Swimming is superb in the lake, warm yet refreshing and the surrounding views breathtaking.

We began from Sacro Monte. Then went to Piazza Motta and to Isola San Giulio by boat. Later we left to visit the villages of Pella and Omegna. Enjoyed every minute of it. It is a quiet lake compared to other italian lakes.

What a beautiful village. Quaint bars. Friendly people. Excellent food. I was not prepared for the Mosquitos though. Ended up with over 100 bites. This ruined it for me. All food stops being served at 10pm so get out early enough and don't forget your mosquito spray. Definitely visit Orta beach club. A good walk but worth it. Lovely restaurant... More

Went end of July on a Sunday. The first sight of the lake, I knew it would be a good day. View was absolutely beautiful, mountain background with buildings embedded in the landscape makes it that much more appealing. I was told by the locals that Lake Orta is one of the cleanest lake in Europe and I would not... More

This is a 'must visit' when in the Western Lakes region of Northern Italy. However, since the small village has limited hotel space, tourists are bused in by the hundreds. The catch is, they don't arrive until mid-late morning, particularly weekdays. So to visit the village and small enchanting Isola (4 minute boat ride) with all its history, go early... More

Enjoy the quiet car free lanes in Orta San Giullo, the lake views, cruises and good food. Bring some euro coins as Orta San Giullo is car free so you park just outside the top of the town (2 euro per hour up too max. 10 euro at which point you get parking through to midnight). Tip: ignore the first... More

The setting of the island in the lake is lerfect. It's no wonder that couples get married at the churches at Sacre Monte or in Orta itself and have their photos taken in the town. The secret is out!
