modest from outside, magnificent inside. The Church contains the Iron crown made out from a nail used to crucify Jesus according to documents , The crown was worn by Mary Theresa the Austrian Empress.

From the outside, we expected a modest cathedral. Stepping inside, magnificent! My pictures do not do it justice.

Basilica of San Michele Maggiore, a beautiful Romanesque church which was built in sandstone instead of the typical brick of the area. The chancel also featured a really interesting pavement mosaic representing the twelve months of the year and a labyrinth made during the 12th century.

This is a nice church with a Romanesque facade and simple interior.

The Crypt has a number of interesting relics.

If you are at least remotely interested in Romanesque art, it's an absolute must-see. It was open throughout the day in September, also a fiendly volonteer gave me a free personal tour. The chapel - it's magnificent - can be illuminated, 1 euro for 10 minutes.

I strongly recommend also a visit to this church which is a small treasure. If you are doing the Via Francigena this is on your way. You can also receive a stamp if you ask for it. This church was very important for Longobard kings. There are also the remains of a painted labirinth.

The facade is wonderful, if a little worn away in places. Inside is really lovely - a very enjoyable visit.
