About
In 1801 Napoleon ordered the demolition of the fortifications for Milan's Castello Sforzesco. This left a large space for the piazza Sempione, now a suitable site for a monumental construction to serve as a triumphal entrance to the city. Begun in 1807 in honour of Napoleon, the arch was not finished until 1838 for the occasion of the coronation of Ferdinando I as King of Lombardy-Venetia. The work of neoclassical architect Luigi Cagnola, inspired by Settimo Severo's arch in Rome, the structure features three colossal Corinthian columns with an arch made of granite from Baveno and adorned with marble from Crevola di Ossola. It is surmounted by the famous 'sestiga della pace' -- the work of Abbondio Sangiorio -- and by four statues of victorious men on horseback.

The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

    A Beautiful Arch
Parco Sempione was inaccessible in places due to the massive storm in Milan during July but the Arch still looked majestic. Dating back to the 19th Century the 'Arch of Peace' is the gateway to the park and leads to the Simplon Pass and was a route from Milan to Paris. A little to the north of the city and out of the main touristy areas but well worth a visit, particularly on a sunny day as a walk in the park is never a bad idea, and if that involves going through Sforzesco Castle then even better.

A Grand Archway Fit for an Emperor
Napoleon commissioned this Arch in recognition of his conquests. Sadly, he didn’t see it finished. Today it is a reminder of days gone by and is a good photo opportunity. The archway doesn’t look out of place and reflects how things were celebrated in the past.

    Good to take photo with.
It was a quiet afternoon when we arrived here. There weren't too many tourists around. Great photo opportunity for us. Just far away, there was KOL doing live sales and a bit annoying for us.

Located at the opposite end of the park from the Castle, this area was vast, clean and pretty. There was an event being prepared for when we visited so we could not get up close but it was still worth a quick stop.

Really loved the huge space all around the Arco, and especially cleanliness, art details on it. There's a lot of nice caffes around it, so it's nice spot to take a coffee and enjoy in view

It is a monumental gate which was originally built to celebrate Napoleon's successful battles. Very beautiful and interesting arc with a large square and many cafes nearby.

Nice to walk through the castle and park to get here. Good architecture around the arc too. Only problem you have is people around trying to ask you to try on “brackets” and sell you stuff

The gate, the castle and the Duamo all allign beautifully in a line. The ancient design of the city can really be seen from here. The best time is to come early in the morning.

The arch was built according to the project of the architect Luigi Cagnola in honor of the victories of Napoleon Bonaparte on the models of ancient Roman triumphal buildings. The arch is 25 meters high and 24 meters wide.
