About
In 1801 Napoleon ordered the demolition of the fortifications for Milan's Castello Sforzesco. This left a large space for the piazza Sempione, now a suitable site for a monumental construction to serve as a triumphal entrance to the city. Begun in 1807 in honour of Napoleon, the arch was not finished until 1838 for the occasion of the coronation of Ferdinando I as King of Lombardy-Venetia. The work of neoclassical architect Luigi Cagnola, inspired by Settimo Severo's arch in Rome, the structure features three colossal Corinthian columns with an arch made of granite from Baveno and adorned with marble from Crevola di Ossola. It is surmounted by the famous 'sestiga della pace' -- the work of Abbondio Sangiorio -- and by four statues of victorious men on horseback.

The area
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

Nice monument in Milan, near to parco sempione and castello sforzesco. It's not very big but anyway it's beautiful and if you are passing from here is nice to take a look

Stunning piece of architecture! I really enjoyed admiring this structure. Gorgeous. Plenty of nice restaurants nearby too and it is right at the end of the park.

We visited it only because we were nearby and then moved on after a quick picture. It is nice to see, but simply a gate to the city as you see in other cities worldwide. If you don't have time to see much, don't bother going to see this. Visit the Duomo and Monumentale Cemetery first.

Beautiful triumphal arch built in 1807 on project of Luigi Cagnola.
It was built on the ancient Roman Walls and on Sempione road and Pass direction that connects Milano to Paris .
It is a neoclassical triumph arch 25 meters high and 24 meters wide, decorated with a number of bas-reliefs , statues and Corintians columns.
At the sides of the Arch of Peace there are two minor rectangular buildings that used to be customs office.

Perhaps because of Covid, perhaps because it is a Monday, the arch plaza was entirely empty! Almost had a 28 days later feel, interrupted only by the noise of some construction work.

The arch is spectacular, although sadly you cannot walk inside it due to ongoing renovation work.

It is a very nice piece of art made of granite and marble as a symbol of victory and issues related to Napoleon as usual. It is on the edge of the Sempione park and middle of a nice square. The overall square is also pretty.

Stands at the center of a pedestrianized plaza, at the edge of the Sempione Park. It is 25 m high and 24m wide, decorated with a number of bas reliefs, statues and Corinthian columns. There is a central passageway flanked by two smaller ones. On top of the Arch stand three sculpture groups . The central one- the Chariot of Peace shows a six horses chariot. The statues on either side of the Arch are the Victories on Horseback.
