The area
Neighbourhood: Centro Storico
The pulsating core of Milan is in Centro. Duomo Square is enclosed by the gothic cathedral, the historic icon of Milan. However, shopping is what draws most crowds to this area. The classy and versatile Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II with luxury boutiques and high quality restaurants will turn any shopping or lunch expedition into a royal experience. Head to the rooftop of the flagship La Rinascente to enjoy the view of the animated square with a panorama of the Duomo. The Corso Vittorio Emanuele II is the street for high-end shopping. Brands of all kinds and street artists attract the attention of all visitors; while at Via Santa Radegonda 16, Luini Panzerotti is a much appreciated street food shop providing unimaginable culinary experiences. If shopping takes its toll on you, consider visiting Castello Sforzesco, a 15th century castle housing several museums. Those looking to relax can go to Parco Sempione, where nature provides respite from the energy of this dynamic and international city.

A little bit of contrast to the consumerism of the Galleria Vittorio we passed through to get here, a tram driving past, the contemplative pose of Da Vinci looking down on you, a nice place to sit and watch the world go by, not exactly busy by Milan standards but also not quiet.

You won't need to go out of your way to visit here as its pretty much central and a few minutes from Duomo.

Part of our Tour Group itinerary in Milano, Piazza della Scala is a pedestrian central square of Milan and is connected to the main square of Milan, Piazza del Duomo by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping street. The elegant square surrounded by important palaces such as Teatro alla Scala, one of the greatest opera house in the world, Palazzo Marino (Milan City Hall) and the Gallerie d’Italia art museum. Central to all these is the Leonardo da Vinci monument by Pietro Magni, 1872, hence the alternate name of Da Vinci Square !
We actually passed through the Shopping Arcade to here and can feel the change in atmosphere, a definite calm and peace presence here. Still it is bustling with tourists, admiring the dominating tall monument dedicated to Leonardo da Vinc. There are also some seats around the inner circle where one can take a break.
The Scala square is just behind the Duomo and provides for a good area to relax as one get to admire the genius Leonardo stature and the various important buildings around it too.

This is an oasis of calm just before you enter the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, dominated by a statue of Leonardo Da Vinci. Somewhere to take a breather after the hustle of Piazza Del Duomo, there are seats around the inner circle.

Just behind is La Scala Opera House, take a seat and get your breath back.

This Piazza is a modern looking Piazza that connects to The Piazza Duomo through the Vittoria Emmanuel Galleria. Looking at a map of the Ancient Mediolanum, it’s a good thing that the most significant of the ancient structures were not paved over by the modern structures. Most of the relevant ancient stuff was actually to the southwest of this site.
There’s the Da Vinci Statue I covered in an earlier review, but here also is the Da Vinci museum. I wasn’t able to go in the museum, but I feel fairly knowledgeable enough to make an educated comment.
After getting a glimpse of The Codex, I was pretty sure I saw something that wouldn’t be completely defined by Isaac Newton, until 200 years later: Rectilinear Motion. We know Da Vinci thought a lot about the motion of particles and we know Galileo, 100 years later, defined gravitational force. Da Vinci, 100 years earlier, defined another force acting on a body in motion: friction.
So, basically, Isaac Newton, 100 years after Galileo, and 200 years after Da Vinci, integrated the works of both Galileo and Da Vinci to create the important first and second laws of motion. (Physics and Dynamics). But, besides the all theoretical notes, this museum will also show a lot of the experimental contributions of Leonardo Da Vinci.

The small square, where the statue of famous and genius Leonardo is located, is very close to most of Milan cultural and historical attractions

Just outside Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, you can't miss it if you walk the arcade. Some place peaceful in the centre.

Piazza della Scala is a significant square adjacent to Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Zona 1 Centro Storico area of the city. In the middle of the square is the monument of Leonardo da Vinci which was sculpted by Pietro Magno in 1872. There are some important buildings surrounding the piazza including Teatro alla Scala opera house from which the piazza takes its name and is situated on the north western side, at the opposite side is Palazzo Marino. The piazza is certainly impressive and was relatively quiet when I visited in July 2020, it is a part of the city that cannot be missed on a visit to the city.
